Welcome back, everyone! Let’s continue investigating a wide variety of topics relating to experiences post-grad. Even if you’re graduating from a different milestone like high school, graduate school, or a Ph.D., this article relates to your next step too! Many of us seek out travel experiences when we are in between ‘life moments’. If you are fortunate enough to participate in traveling around the country, the state, or the world, keep reading below to find out how to initiate a large trip.

Selecting a Destination Spot on your Trip!

  • Evaluate the Trip You’re Seeking: The first step of planning your trip comes down to deciding what kind of trip you’re seeking: a relaxing vacation, cultural exploration, historical journey, etc… Once you’ve got that idea down, you’ll have a much easier time narrowing in on a location. If you’re traveling with friends, make sure to engage in a group meeting to discuss everyone’s opinions and what they are seeking out of the experience before moving forward with booking flights or hotels. An extra tip we would encourage you to do is set expectations on delegation of tasks – will one person book the flights? Another person the hotel? Another in charge of reservations? Whatever this looks like for your group, splitting up responsibilities is a great way to keep everyone involved and the workload of trip-planning balanced.
  • Compare Flight Costs: Especially if you don’t have a deadline for which you must be back home, we encourage you to be flexible in selecting the dates for your travel well in advance, so as to take advantage of the most cost-effective options. A quick Google flight search will help you compare your flight costs depending on a variety of weekends. If there is a large gap in price from one weekend vs. a few more weekends out, it may be beneficial to delay that certain location to a future date.
  • Check Airbnb or Hotel Availability: Before jumping into the planning stage, it’s crucial to check for availability and places to stay. This may lead you to a hostel, hotel, or Airbnb, but you must check these out before booking flights as there are large price changes on weekends for flights, and high fluctuations in lodging costs.

*Always try to book flights and lodging as far in advance as possible! Although it sometimes appears like a hassle or is easily procrastinated, you always save money and a headache by doing so.

Planning Ahead…

  • Second Trip Evaluation: Now that you’re in the “fun” stage and the main logistics are figured out, it’s time for your second evaluation. Discuss amongst yourself or your group the way you’d like to structure your day-to-day itinerary – do you want a jam-packed weekend full of sightseeing, a relaxing few days to chill out, or a “go with the flow” walk through a new city? Whichever of these types of trips you choose, it’s time to start scheduling a loose structure of each day plan to secure tours, tickets, reservations, and more!
  • Itinerary: An aspect of weekend travel that I became aware of quite immediately was the benefit of mapping the distance between sites you want to see EARLY ON! This is an easy mistake to avoid, as accidentally placing two locations that are far away from each other back-to-back on an itinerary may lead you to lose several hours of the few days you have… So, start looking into certain shops, experiences, tours, sites, restaurants, or other places you’re hoping to see and how they are spaced amongst one another before touching down on your trip.
  • Budget! Finally, it is always important to maintain an awareness of your spending on each trip. Some places are inherently more expensive than others, so saving costs on lodging/travel vs. picking up souvenirs are great ways to stay in line with a similar budget on each trip.

Welcome back, everyone! Today, we’re regrouping after a brief hiatus (I traveled on Birthright to Israel for the last 2 weeks!) on our post-graduate series where we are aiming to prepare you to navigate all of the change that comes with graduating from college. With that, we know that many of you are feeling unsure about what your next step will look like, should be, or even could be. If that sounds like you, then we highly encourage you to read the below and learn about the value of networking to identify potential career paths and opportunities.

Networking Post-Graduation…

Over the last few years, we hope that you’ve been working to build up a bit of a network on LinkedIn. Utilizing alumni connections, as well as peers, past mentors, past colleagues (at internships or college jobs), family friends, friends of parents, friends siblings, or any connection you can fathom can help you build an online network. Once you have your ‘foot in the door’ through that primary or secondary connection, you’re set to initiate a conversation! We recommend you send a direct message on the platform and inquire about an ‘informational conversation.’ Once the date and time are set, read below to nail the preparation!

  • Purpose: Before engaging in networking (calls, meet-ups, corporate events, and more), it’s crucial to conduct a quick search on the person’s (or people’s) background, a light gauge of their current work, and a few tips about their larger industry. Doing so will not only help you to avoid taking a large portion of time dedicated solely to introductions but will showcase your professionalism. Make sure to prepare specific questions relating to their career trajectory, project success, company experiences, etc. If you could ask your prepared questions to anyone, that’s a sign that they are not meaningful enough for the person you’re speaking with.
  • Intentional Questions: As it relates to our point above, you should not be asking questions like, “How’d you get here?” or “So, what do you do?” If you’ve initiated a chat, it is likely for a specific purpose to learn more about a role. For example, if you’re speaking to someone on the public relations side of the business, focus questions around, “How have you handled our company’s relationship with X topic/company/etc.? How much of your time do you spend avoiding negative PR vs creating positive PR?” Always make the employee feel valued! After all, they dedicated a portion of their day specifically to you.
    • Extra Tip: Set yourself up for a seamless conversation by noting the topics you’d like to learn about in the introductory email! For example, if you’re reaching out to a Marketing employee at a brand agency, ask about specific projects, brands, or processes you are interested in so that your conversation is already on track.
  • Thank Them for their Time! Always make sure to express gratitude to the person for taking up a part of their day to speak with you. Thank the person for discussing their role, opening up about a certain topic, offering advice or direction, etc. We also encourage you to follow up with a thank you note or email to wrap up the chat in a kind way.
  • Maintain Professional Relationships: A coffee chat might be a periodic occurrence, but communication should not be. Make sure to maintain the relationships that you’ve worked to schedule and cultivate! Whether this means a weekly check-in, email update of your recent accomplishments, or quick link to a relevant article, make sure to keep consistent contact and follow-up after your thank you note!
    • Extra Tip: Especially in instances where the employee you chatted with could assist in a future job opportunity or interview process, remember the value in creating personal relationships that span beyond the scope of day-to-day work and tasks. Showing your desire to keep up to date will undoubtedly assist you in building a support network to vouch for you as it relates to any role.

Welcome back, everyone! Today, we’re here to walk you through another post-grad concept in our series that aims to help you transition from college and into the ‘real world’. For many students, an immediate move is the next best step. Especially for those of you chasing jobs or opportunities in other states, the reality becomes that moving back home for a little while is no longer an option. However, for students who are moving to a city nearby their hometown, are in a transition phase, are trying to figure out the next steps, or for any other reason, moving home might be a GREAT option for you! Keep reading to find out the main benefit of living at home post-grad…

Budgeting and Saving up for a Smooth Move-out!

Above all, the key benefit of staying at home after graduation is in saving up some money from your salary or offsetting some expenses of rent/lifestyle adjustments prior to securing a full-time role. If you are interested in moving to a big city, it likely comes with rent of >$1000, in addition to utilities, groceries, and other common lifestyle expenses. In order to ensure your comfort when embarking on that journey, saving up and living at home is a fast-track resource to get you on your way.

Key Budgeting Tips

  • Prioritize: Before you can figure out and customize your budgeting strategy, you must evaluate what activities, hobbies, or materialistic components of your lifestyle are most important to you. This may look like a monthly gym membership expense, eating at restaurants, or a certain amount of money you are willing to spend on new clothing/ accessories. Whatever it is, make a list of your ‘non-negotiables’.
  • Plan: To begin planning out a budget, write down your goal for setting aside a certain amount of money each month. With a written goal, you will have a concrete number to designate success and work up to. Additionally, write down your income for each month. Include your job salary and any other work obligations (for college students this may include babysitting, house-sitting, pet-sitting, or any other part-time roles that bring in extra money).
  • Create: With a plan in mind and a list of priorities set, you are ready to begin budgeting! When listing out monthly expenses, differentiate those expenses which are fixed (ie: rent, student loans, car payments) from expenses that differ on a monthly basis.
    • Extra Tip: Be Realistic! If you are dining out 2-3 times a week, leave a larger budget for that category. However, you must begin to consider sacrificing other expenses in order to be able to save money at the end of the month; think about cutting back on other ‘wants’, like money you may spend on home decorating, clothing, or other “elective” expenses.
    • Extra Tip: Use Past Expenses! To get an idea of where your money is spent each month, utilize a past credit card bill, or create a document of all your expenses for any given month. That way, when the next month begins, you will have an accurate picture of how you spend your money and your estimates will be based on facts instead of assumptions.
    • Extra Tip: Categorize! Make a list of all expenses. Consider each category you spend money on. When budgeting, be aware of grocery costs, clothing costs, “fun” costs, drink prices, laundry costs, gym/exercise costs, etc. Never overlook expenses just because they are necessary, include everything in your budget plan.
  • Consider: Be aware of times during the year when expenses naturally increase. These expenses may include birthday presents, holidays, vacations, tax months, wedding presents, etc. Set aside enough money to utilize during the year instead of having to dig into your income each time you encounter one of these payments.

Welcome back to our post-grad series, everyone! Today, we’re here to discuss our best practices for ensuring your successful transition out of college and post-grad if you do not yet have a full-time role secured. If you’re struggling to map out the next few months, feeling uneasy about how to prepare yourself for corporate life, or otherwise curious about a lifestyle transition, this blog is for you! Considering an Internship Post-Grad!

  • City Exploration: With many companies still offering full-time remote opportunities or pushing for a return to in-office work, an internship in a new location is still a great way (or excuse) to push you to explore a different area of your state or even the entire country! Especially for those of us who don’t yet have a full-time position secured at the moment of graduation, moving away and knowing that there is essentially an “expiration” date for your to reevaluate provides a huge sense of comfort and is the epitome of… why not?! So, we encourage you to take a deep breath even if you have no plan for your career, and shift your mindset into evaluating an internship or short-term opportunities to continue exploring your interests.
  • Career Exploration: In a similar way to how an internship may encourage you to try out a completely new environment, this job format may also provide you a chance to explore a completely different career path or try something that you may have never previously considered! Why not go for that accounting, marketing, graphic design, fashion, product development, supply chain, real estate, finance, or any other role that taps into a newfound skill set that you haven’t ever been able to develop in the past?! If you’re itching with discomfort about knowing what you ‘want to do’ forever, don’t fret! That is a completely normal feeling that you can easily tackle while becoming even more experienced. Consider taking a few LinkedIn courses with the downtime you have this summer to take a preview into a variety of fields and see which ones leave you feeling inspired.
  • Push Back and a Chance to … Relax! While internships are still an equally professional commitment to a full-time role, this type of temporary commitment will still allow you to push off your final date before full-time immersion at an organization. We know that graduation may come with a sense of anxiety about the future and your long-term career goals, so instead of diving in headfirst, we completely support taking it “step by step into the water” by trying out an internship first.
  • Use Your Network: If you’re struggling to find a “standard” internship through online job platforms, school resources, etc., we encourage you to use any and all of your professional connections! This may be friends, family, professors, or any person you’ve met along your professional and academic journey. You can also dig into companies you’re interested in on LinkedIn and by taking advantage of alumni connections – ask for informational interviews, do your background research, and you’re sure to develop meaningful professional connections to sustain throughout your career while exploring. You never know what or who might help you get your foot in the door somewhere new, so approach every conversation with professional etiquette, motivation, and a desire to learn!

Welcome to our new series, grads! With many colleges hosting graduations throughout the country, we thought it’d be a perfect time to regroup on a whole bunch of topics to tackle post-grad and ensure a successful transition period. With post-grad comes. a lot of unknown territories – many friends are moving across the country, students are pursuing graduate school, others are seeking a full-time job or already have one secured… and everyone is truly on their own unique path! So, we’ll start with relocating after graduation. If this sounds like something you’re interested in or planning on doing, keep reading to find out our reasons as to WHY you should consider this option!

Relocating Post-Grad…

  • Developing Independence: While college is undoubtedly a phenomenal resource that allows students to experience independence for the first time, living on your own in a different city will provide even more opportunities for maturity and growth. Likely, you will be placing yourself in an environment without the cushion of dozens of friends, familiar professors and buildings, and even restaurants and coffee shops! For that reason, you may find yourself with new, unexpected responsibilities and opportunities: navigating grocery shopping, finding outlets of relaxation, new exercise routes or studios, seeking new friendships or mentors, etc. This is an amazing time to put your skills to the test!
  • Dream Company: At least in my experience, I’ve found that some of my “dream” companies are located solely in California, New York, Austin, etc. So, if leaving your hometown may allow you to pursue your absolute dream role, this is the time to do so! Not only will working for a company that you’re passionate about make the time you spend in a city more enjoyable and fun, but it may allow you to explore an area of the U.S. that you hadn’t even previously considered!
  • New Start: A super normal feeling that comes with college graduation is some time to reevaluate your current satisfaction with the people who you surround yourself with. While not necessarily bad, it’s completely reasonable to feel as though you’ve outgrown your close circle, or that you’re in the market for a refresh. Moving to a new location will undoubtedly help you immerse yourself in a new culture and therefore surround yourself with people different and similar to yourself. Refreshing your social circle after graduation is a phenomenal reason to explore a new city, state, or region of the U.S. and beyond!
  • Temporary Commitment: More now than ever before, companies are developing and offering rotational programs for graduates post-college. Accepting a role of this sort will provide you with an exceptional measure of testing out a new city with an expiration date in mind. One year, two years, or even a few months from now, you’ll be able to reassess your contentment with a city and potentially even relocate again!
  • Affordable Living: Our last tip to consider if you’re in the market for moving is the cost of living and how it fluctuates across the country. Take NYC for example, the amount of space in your living situation will be far less than probably any other city due to the average cost of the rent. And more so, other cities may offer different income tax expectations, transportation costs, proximity to airports (to continue travel or visit home!), and other expenses you might not consider. We encourage you to conduct a quick search online to measure the cost of cities against one another to find the best fit for you and your anticipated salary.

Good morning, everyone, and happy (already half of) May! We hope that you are experiencing the warmth, sunshine, and sense of renewal that comes with a new season. Although it feels like summer is already upon us, make sure to read below on how to refresh as soon as today and stay on track with your annual goals!

Let’s Refresh and Renew…

Switch it Up!

Spring is a fantastic time to create a new space to operate in! Many of us have been cooped up in our bedroom-turned “office” spaces, have hunkered down in the kitchen, or seem glued to our living room couch as a place of work – it’s no doubt time for a change. Simply turning your bed in a different direction, moving your desk in front of a window, or “accessorizing” with a new lamp or curtain will totally transform the energy of your workspace. Even transitioning to a different room or floor in your home could create an entirely new and previously unforeseen way to work!

Extra tip: If you are still working fully remotely, try to schedule a few days to get out of your home! This may look like a nearby park, library, coffee shop, cafe, or any other space in which you can operate your work (computer or materials). Doing so will force you to re-focus in a new space and will instantaneously optimize productivity and motivation. If you cannot work from a different location, going on a walk and scheduling breaks throughout the day to ensure you ‘unplug’ from your screen is key to professional success and endurance.

Re-evaluate Winter Goals

With a new season also comes an optimal moment to re-evaluate a goal set created a few months prior. Are you on track with the little steps? Holding yourself accountable? Progressing towards an ultimate number, time, percentage, or another measure of success? If so, keep on chugging! If, instead you’re finding that a previously set goal no longer suits your motives, then this is a great time to re-draft your hopes and accountable measure for the rest of spring up to the start of summer. If you’re reading this and thinking about corporate or rule-oriented goals, check in with your manager to track your progress from an external point of view and in some instances, adjust!

Extra Tip: If you’re struggling to keep up with goals or are feeling sluggish throughout the day, try out a new organizational method. Changing up your routine and schedule to an A/B structure, time block, or other strategy may be the push you need towards feeling renewed.

If you work in a corporate setting, it’s likely you’ve heard the term ‘soft skills’ used before. As a working professional, it’s crucial to understand your strengths and weaknesses in your role and as a contributing teammate. Within skills are (you might’ve guessed it)… soft skills! According to The Balance, they are defined as “non-technical skills that relate to how you work. They include how you interact with colleagues, how you solve problems, and how you manage your work.”

So, how do you cultivate and identify if you have soft skills and how to improve upon them? Find out everything you need to know below!

Soft Skills Explained

What are Soft Skills?

Soft skills won’t look like something technical, for example, having proficiency working in Excel. However, your ability to network, advocate in interviews, communicate across all role levels, manage your time, empathize with coworkers, actively listen and contribute to meetings, and the intangible assets you bring to the table are those that will define your soft skill competencies. These skills are heavily valued by recruiters, employers, and managers as they make up the, sometimes unmeasurable, aspects of employees who become distinguishably successful in organizations.

Another key attribute of soft skills is the way that they will impact any transition into a higher role (like going from individual contributor to manager), shifting into a new space (like going from Marketing to Operations), or meeting and onboarding teammates. Soft skills, not narrowly linked to a software platform or output, are those that can transfer into multiple areas. Take it this way… can you think of any corporate role that doesn’t include meeting invites and expectations to participate in group settings? Well, having strong communication, collaboration, and team working skills will integrate into success in any team setting!

Extra Tip: Especially as you phase college, volunteer, and other experiences out of your resume due to relevancy, make sure to always include a section for soft corporate skills! These will likely be the bridge that separates you from the next candidate and is super important to your overall profile and perception.

How do you grow your Soft Skills?

In reality, soft skills are less measurable and executable than ‘hard’ – you can’t take a test to measure your ability to empathize, or ask impactful questions in meetings. However, many corporate companies, as well as online platforms like LinkedIn, offer courses that employees can enroll in to improve upon these skills. Make sure to check in with your management to get a sense of the corporate buzz around your reputation, and identify certain skills where you have room for improvement. This way, you can be intentional when drafting a timeline and goal-setting for specific skills, as well as narrowing down online enrollment in courses to those most relevant to your development. Also, make sure to frequently check in with leadership about skills that are highly valued in future positions you may pursue, across your organization, or in other areas that you could transition into.

Welcome back, everyone! We hope you’ve had a great last 2 weeks since our brief hiatus – I spent the last week and a half or so traveling Switzerland with family and am back feeling as refreshed as ever. However, with 7 days of PTO undoubtedly comes dozens of emails, missed meetings, coming deadlines, and more. So, how do you (and how should I?!) catch up after a duration of PTO? Find out everything you need to know below…

Catching up After PTO

  • Hydrate: One of the best ways to stay awake and help your body get back into the swing of a healthy week is to keep yourself hydrated. Keep a water bottle by your desk and try to drink the entire thing multiple times throughout the day; and if you’re worried about forgetting, set reminders on your calendar or mobile phone to do so! There are also a variety of water bottles available everywhere that track time stamps on the side to remind you to keep up through the day.
    • Extra TipIn order to encourage yourself, try forcing yourself to finish a glass of water prior to a morning juice, matcha, or caffeine! That way, your drink of choice will serve as a reward instead of as a starting point for your day.
  • Nutrients! As enticing as it may feel to snack on chips, morning sweets, or any junk food, try to jump-start your week with nutrients instead. Starting off the week with healthy meals will rejuvenate your body and ensure that you are feeling energized and prepared for all obligations. On the same note, we also offer you the tip to bring workout clothes to work, as it may be your key to stepping back into the gym (and will also save the time of having to stop back home).
  • Stay Organized: Making a to-do list, filling out a daily planner or calendar, or even using a sticky note and writing down what you need to complete is proven to help individuals accomplish their daily tasks and goals. This will also keep you organized and decrease your chance of forgetting a meeting or assignment. Make sure to check out the multiple articles we’ve written in the past to learn about certain scheduling strategies that could assist your organization… we recommend starting with ‘time-blocking’!
  • Check-In: With your inbox! Try out a “priority” folder to move all of your most important emails from the weekend into a different space, as we all know how crowded an inbox may be when we take a momentary break. And make sure to keep your team in the know about where your projects or outstanding requests are on their way to completion – while you’re not expected to finish all of your obligations momentarily, you are expected to inform those that rely on your work when they can expect it!
  • Let Yourself Breathe: Finally,… schedule breaks into your day as you would any other obligation! Letting yourself have time to relax is equally as important as completing your work to your mental clarity and ability to maintain motivation.

Searching for a new role? Check out our open jobs list!

Welcome back, everyone! Today we’re here to guide you through a few things to think about if you’re exploring the idea of a potential career shift into a new industry. It can definitely feel a bit intimidating to conceptualize adjusting your entire career, but we want to make sure that you know you never have to feel stuck in a role! There are an endless number of responsibilities, roles, companies, industries, and more that candidates can take on through a career lifetime. So, if you have any kind of itch to make the move, keep reading below to find out how to start…

Shifting Careers into a New Path

  • Self-Reflect: Before you make a large decision, it’s crucial to spend time assessing how you truly feel. After (always) implementing the 24-hour rule, you will be ready to clearly analyze how you felt in your previous position, about your career path and responsibilities, and even about your opportunity for lateral and vertical advancements. If you are struggling to identify aspects of your role that helped you to feel fulfilled or content, then this is a great indicator that you may be ready for a career 180.
  • Acceptance: It is all too easy to fall into a trap of feeling like you should have every aspect of your life figured out at an early age; we’re here to tell you that this is not the truth! You will likely undergo identity, career, and several other types of adjustments at multiple times throughout your life, and that is absolutely ok. The next step towards initiating this change is accepting your decision and supporting yourself.
  • Strengths and Weaknesses Assessment: A great way to begin gauging new opportunities is through gaining an understanding of your own strengths and weaknesses. By channeling these aspects of your personality and skills, you will be able to start envisioning jobs that appeal to your interests and abilities.
  • Consider Environment: Can you envision yourself in a completely new city or environment? Are you ready for a new climate or a complete restart? Transitioning into a new role is a perfect time to explore a new location.
    • Extra tip: We encourage you to begin comparing the price of living across various cities to be able to assess how you would be able to sustain a comfortable routine in a new space.
  • Utilize Your Network: Once you have started to visualize a new place, role, skill, or other aspect of your new endeavor, then you can begin nailing down other people’s perspectives both of your decision and of their personal experiences. Utilize your network, mentors, friends, and family to gauge new opportunities before diving in headfirst! Consulting mentors and connections you’ve built will allow you to gain perspective about different industry moments and existing opportunities.
  • Apply! Especially at Esquire, we understand and encourage you to get your foot in the door in whatever manner you can! Whether this means throwing an application out on Indeed or LinkedIn, passing along your information to a connection, or setting up an information interview/coffee chat, you never know when your next best opportunity may fall into your lap. Remember to be confident both in yourself and in your capabilities; you’ll land the position in no time!

Welcome back, everyone! I hope that you’ve had a great and productive week. Today, we’re here to remind you of the importance of truly logging off and unplugging from work and life this weekend. It’s super important that you remind yourself to embrace your days off and fully invest in yourself and your free time without the influence of screens, socials, and work! So, if you’re entering into the weekend later today, make sure to follow along with our tips below to extract the most value out of this time.

Unplugging from Responsibilities:

  • Set Boundaries in Advance: In order to truly achieve the goal of unplugging, it’s crucial to set yourself up for success by creating boundaries in advance. Whether this means a time of day, a specific day in the week, or a limited number of times checked, set a restriction for yourself to follow regarding your work and technology. Implementing these subtle goals will provide you with a sense of achievement and a “rule” to stay accountable to. There are also many ways that you can hold yourself accountable within your own mobile device, set screen time limits and reminders on social apps so that you can truly understand the amount of time you’re spending scrolling.
  • Make Plans! If you feel the same way as I do, then you know that creeping feeling that settles in that you should be doing “more” when lying in bed or sitting unoccupied. For that reason, try to occupy yourself over the weekend by creating a schedule or set of plans to take action through. If it’s nice outside, make sure to get outdoors for a walk, a picnic, a trip to the dog park, a barbeque, a drink outside, or even a workout class. This is also a great way to keep up with friends in a socially casual setting doing something that you enjoy! Especially if you’re looking to broaden your friendships, we encourage you to reach out to someone new and ask if they’d like to get together this weekend to connect.
  • Maintain Open Communication With Your Team: If a sense of guilt is taking over your mind, it may be a result of a difference between operating standards within your team or organization. Remember, just because your coworker or manager may stay online through all hours of the night does not mean that you must! Having an open communication plan where you let your manager know when you will and will not be reachable by mail or whatever it may be will relieve your sense of uncertainty and therefore need to stay in contact at all times. Something that I do that I find super helpful is muting any notifications from ‘work apps’ on my phone throughout the weekend – this way, even if someone is emailing on a Sunday, I won’t be reminded of it until Monday morning.
  • Treat Yourself to Something FUN! Whether this is a few dollars spent on a new coffee from your local shop, a trip to the spa, an outing to dinner, a sports game, a concert, a new piece of jewelry, an hour of meditation, a daily journaling session, or anything else that brings you joy … treat yourself this weekend! It is all too often that days pass us by without even a moment of acknowledgment of doing something solely for YOU. So, regardless of spend, find an activity or treat that will bring you joy this weekend and indulge.. after all, we work to live!

Searching for a new position? Check out our open jobs list!

Welcome back, everyone! Today, we’re here to discuss a topic that might normally bring a feeling of unease and nerves… leaving your job! If you’re looking for a new position, transitioning into a new space, or otherwise itching for an external opportunity, keep reading. We’re here to offer you our best tips and tricks for ensuring that you leave a company on positive terms (remember, you might end up wanting to return and not even know it yet!).

Leaving a Company on Good Terms

  • Give notice (a minimum of 2 weeks)! Ultimately, managers and leaders are aware that there will naturally be turnover in their company. However, ensuring that you don’t leave your teammates or direct reports scrambling to complete tasks by providing ample notice of your departure is key to leaving on a positive note. Take stock of your current capacity – are you in busy season? Are you about to wrap up projects at quarter-end? What does your workload look like over the next few months? The more you can plan ahead, the more you can phase your work out toward other teammates in a timely manner.
    • Extra Tip: If your company expects that you provide a letter of resignation, make sure to put thought into it and meaningfully craft your reason for leaving. Express gratitude for the opportunity, your departure date, the reasoning behind your decision, and any related information that can help craft the story of your exit plan.
  • Participate in Exit Interviews: Think about it like this, although you are exiting the company, there are still ways that you can provide value as you make your way out. One super attainable way of doing so is participating in the exit interview process – during this time, you’ll likely connect with an HR representative to discuss feedback you have on the culture, management, your role, etc., as well as your reason for leaving your position. Thinking through valuable feedback to share, layered with personal examples and anecdotes, is a fabulous way of ensuring that your opinions are heard and ideas are shared to shape the company’s policy and culture.
  • Wrap up any work and Assist with Transitions! As we mentioned above, assisting in the process of transitioning your work off of your plate is a great way to make your exit more seamless. Think about what standard work you can create to document your personal processes. How can you share the knowledge? How can you best create resources to help teammates take over your projects? Setting up time with others who will help contribute to taking over your workload is a great way to solidify professional relationships that will last and a reputation for being a team player!
  • Express Gratitude: As your final date nears, be extra mindful of expressing gratitude to your team and management. Thank anyone that has contributed to your growth and experience at the given company – this might look like a lateral teammate, leadership-level employee, executive, mentor, peer, etc. In the digital age, it is super easy to maintain professional relationships with just about anyone that you’ve ever worked with through platforms like LinkedIn, so ensure that these connections are strong, based on positive perception, and can be elongated throughout the remainder of your career. Like we always say, networking and connections are often the bridge between you and your dream role… so keep up with your professional relationships!

Welcome back, everyone! As we spend this week discussing industries that are hiring and ways to increase your candidate appearance, we also thought it would be fun to touch on a topic all working professionals encounter … emails! Many of us receive and send dozens of emails DAILY, and if you’re anything like us, you’ve run into a few parody videos on social media that expose different signatures, generational approaches to a ‘professional tone’, and humor around the topic. So, keep reading below for our take on email professionalism as well as a few tips on how to spice up and differentiate your personality through the screen…

Email Professionalism and Customization

  • Subject Line: Kindly, get to the point! If the email is urgent, express that in the subject line but use it sparingly so as to make sure that when it is used, it holds value. Maintain awareness of your ability to tag emails for urgency and priority in peoples’ inboxes – and layer on your clarity by including “URGENT:” or “RESPONSE NEEDED:” if the email has to be resolved before any other!
    • Other key terms to use in subject lines: “Request:”, “Review:”, “Runthrough”, “Walkthrough”… remember, everyone is jumping between meetings and projects throughout the day, so the more context you give to your meeting invites or email subject line, the easier it will be for you to obtain replies. This is especially impactful when working with cross-functional teams that might need a refresh on your topic!
  • Greetings: Depending on your relationship with the recipient, use a greeting. If you do not know the recipient, you should be more formal with your greeting (using an intro like “To whom it may concern…”). Setting the tone of an email through a greeting is a great way to initiate professionalism while maintaining pleasantry. If you have never spoken to the individual you’re corresponding with, this is also a great time to introduce yourself (your role/reports/team you are placed within) to give your reader a better understanding of why you are reaching out.
    • If you’re new to a company, make sure to pay attention to how other employees initiate their emails to stay aligned with the tone and terms used! Examples include: “Good morning ____,”, “Hello ___,” “Hi ___” – no “Hey”!
  • Purpose: With everything that we are tasked with throughout the day, it is reasonable to assume that no one wants to spend extra time reading emails that drag on. If you need action by a specific date, make sure to lead with that, as open-ended emails can be confusing. If your purpose includes a timeline, due date, request on behalf of a specific person on the chain, etc., make sure to bold or italicize that vital piece of information to ensure you draw attention. Setting up expectations for an email is also an effective strategy, see below:

Example: “The below includes a summary of our meeting this morning (4/6) and next steps:

  • Who:
  • What:
  • When:”

and… always tag people who are assigned tasks for visibility and accountability!

Searching for a new position? Check out our open jobs list!

Welcome back, everyone! As we spoke about last week, many industries are doing pretty well right now and actually still hiring. While it might feel like a difficult time to seek out a new position, if you’re engaging in an interview process or at all interested in a career pivot, make sure to read the below and work on becoming the top talent and best candidate you can be!

Becoming Top Talent…

  1. Updated and Relevant Resume: A tale as old as time… yes you absolutely need a resume in order to apply to a position (and we are sure you knew that!). However, as times change and platforms to create resumes before ever more accessible, now is a great time to create a few different versions to best cater to differing positions. If you are applying to new and more creative, digitally-focused, or “modern” roles, a pop of color or unconventional layout may make the most sense! Having a variety on hand to choose from when you click apply is the best way to “customize” your application and showcase your dedication to roles.
    • Extra tip: Be conscious of fonts, coloration, page frames, or profile pictures as it relates to the industry or role you’re looking at! Different companies and jobs call for different tones and levels of formality.
  2. Customized Cover Letter: Similar to our advice above, it’s a fantastic idea to accumulate a variety of cover letters detailing different strengths, unique “tidbits” about you, and custom formats that will appeal to recruiters, roles, responsibilities, or experiences. Make sure to acknowledge specific attributes of positions and reasonings as to why you’re pursuing a role in the letter to avoid sounding impersonal. And use our generic test: if you take out the name of the company on your cover letter, will it still be relevant to that job? That organization? That role? If the answer is no and your letter can be recycled to any application, it’s time to improve and refresh.
  3. Complimentary LinkedIn Profile: As much as it may feel redundant, we HIGHLY encourage you to keep your LinkedIn profile page up to date at all times! We use LinkedIn Recruiter on a daily basis as we seek an endless quantity of candidates for a wide range of roles. While your resume may speak to your experience, keeping yourself current online, especially on LinkedIn, is equally crucial to succeeding in portraying your “best professional self.” LinkedIn is also a fantastic platform to allow you to expand on professional attributes that didn’t fit into your resume.
  4. Portfolio or Creative Attributes: If you’re applying to a creative role or come from a background where having a portfolio is common to your field, make sure to submit these materials when you apply to positions or create links that make them accessible on resources like a resume! You want to always make sure your hiring manager or recruiter has a full picture of who you are and what you bring to the table… so lay it all on the line!
  5. Clean Social Platforms: Finally, make sure your social platforms are professionally appropriate and private where you see fit! In today’s environment, it should be expected that your socials contribute to how you are perceived as a candidate, so make sure that they do just that. If you feel more comfortable setting your social profiles to private, we also encourage you to do so.

Welcome back, everyone! We hope that you all had a great weekend spent with friends, family, and the people you enjoy most. Today, we’re back to discussing the importance of a brand’s online and social presence. If you are starting a new company, working within the brand or social marketing space, interested in getting involved, or simply looking for some education about the topic… this is the article for you! Keep reading to find out how to grow your social following below…

Growing a Brand Online Presence and Following:

Know Your Audience

Above all, know your target market and brand audience! Depending on each platform (between Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, etc.), your brand message will be able to easily reach different demographics and consumers with a variety of purchasing intent. Take Pinterest for example, would that work for our brand? Would a client or candidate likely seek a “Pin” in order to identify a new job opportunity? We’ll let you brainstorm about that question while we leave you with one last tip about this idea: before hopping onto any social channel, directly and effectively assess your audience, your product, and the intent you hope to achieve (whether purchasing a good, creating a relationship, offering a service, increasing follower conversation,…).

  • Extra Note: Almost every online social platform is available for free! Differentiating your advertisements by investing in their integrated suite of ‘boosted’ content opportunities is a great way to expand your audience reach exponentially. So, we also encourage you to identify your social media budget and advertising spend before engaging in creation so as to hold yourself accountable and understand a realistic view of performance and reach.

Consistency

In order to paint a reliable image and provide value to your consumers, always be consistent in branding. Not only do we mean in the message you send, and the type of content you provide, but we also encourage you to post at similar frequencies each, day, week, or month. This way, you will start you create a relationship with your consumers where they will know what to expect, when, and in what form to best access your brand and its products or services. Consistently posting content (at least once or twice a week!) is the best way to optimize your reach and build a consistent following from the ground up.

  • Extra Tip: We have a TON of previous articles available on our website that will provide you with a suite of different ways to manage your time and create a schedule. So, find the best strategy that works for you, and make sure to set aside time solely dedicated to social media and branding activities so that you can dedicate your full attention and effort. You can also ‘batch’ out content so as to mitigate the need to revisit posts throughout the week and instead just have a bunch ready to click ‘post’ on when the time is right!

Integrating Consumer in Brand Voice

Millennials and Gen Z are rapidly obtaining the largest portion of buying power from our US consumers, and as these individuals are more than not “digital natives”, they possess a different set of brand expectations as they seek products. In order to make this highly impactful population feel valued, it is crucial to loop them into your brand message and intent. Ask what your followers want to see! What they’re looking to purchase! How you can better deliver on their wants and needs! However you have the resources to discuss your brand with these consumers and offer them a voice and role in your company (from an external perspective), we encourage you to do so.

Welcome back everyone and HAPPY FRIDAY! Today, as some of us are ‘recovering’ from Thursday work events, happy hours, cocktail evenings, networking parties, and more, we thought it would be a perfect time to regroup on corporate expectations for behavior in these situations. In order to secure the respect of your coworkers, direct reports, and other employees, make sure to follow along with the steps below!

Behavior in Work ‘Drinking’ Settings:

The main focus of the below is guidance surrounding drinking behaviors in work environments. You may not be sitting in the office, but remember that you are still with coworkers and leadership, and should behave as if you were in a corporate setting. The key to these types of events is engaging with your limitations and making sure to have fun! So, identify your balance below and ensure that you won’t have to ever feel ‘work scaries’.

  • Mandatory? The begging question is, are these events mandatory?! The short answer is yes, and the long answer is no. Realistically, you cannot be forced to attend an event that occurs outside of your work obligations and hours. However, when able, you should always prioritize engagement and participation in company events. These are special times, outside of work hours, when you are afforded to get to know your teammates and management on a personal level and avoid just work-related topics. So, when able, always try to go! however, if family, doctor, appointments, religious, or other obligations are getting in the way of a certain day or time, make sure to inform your management of the reason why you cannot attend and know that it will be accommodated.
  • Typical Duration/Length: You can expect to spend, on average, approximately 2-3 hours at work happy hours or after-hours corporate events. It takes at least 30 minutes to get situated in a new space, especially if you are leaving the office and venturing into a new environment. The next hour and so after is often unstructured and casual. So, if you’re engaging with a teammate or really enjoying yourself, stay for longer! if you have plans after, are tired, or are struggling to maintain your social battery, make sure to stay for an appropriate amount of time, and then understand that you can leave. After all, you are dedicating additional hours to ‘work’ even if it doesn’t feel like it, so leadership knows that you have a personal life to get back to afterward.
  • Pairing Drinks with Food and Water! We’re all adults here, but it’s always worth reminding each of you that mixing a cocktail with an app and a glass of water is key to offsetting the effects of alcohol. You never want to find yourself in a situation where you are overly intoxicated around work peers, so balancing alcohol is crucial to your engagement and self-awareness at happy hours and events. If there isn’t going to be food at the event, make sure to pack a snack or eat a larger lunch. Additionally, while there is almost always water wherever you’ll be, packing an extra bottle never hurts! A 1:1 ratio with a drink and either a snack or glass of water is a great way to measure out your balance and hold yourself accountable.
  • Steer Clear of Shots! On the same note, we highly encourage you to steer clear of shots and even ‘hard liquor’ when able. These types of drinks will undoubtedly have a more rapid and intense effect on your awareness and alcohol levels, so be super mindful of ingesting these types of drinks as well as the effect they have on you specifically.
  • Positive Chat Only! Finally, we know that ‘loose’ feeling that comes with a few drinks. However, we encourage you to avoid ANY gossiping with coworkers or management! Remember that you are held to what you say and how you behave in and outside of the office, so ensuring that there are only ever positive things that people have to say about you will pay off in the long run as it relates to your professional reputation. So, even if you are pulled for a chat and to share the ‘tea’, zip those lips!

Welcome back, everyone! We hope that you enjoyed your weekend despite (if you’re in Chicago) the freezing wind that blasted through the city. Regardless, we know Spring MUST be around the corner and coming at some point! Irrespective of where you’re situated and working from this morning, we know that many of you have or will soon experience a return to formal in-office work requirements. If that sounds like you, and you’re working through the emotional and logistical changes that are on the way, then this article is for you. Keep reading to find out how to bring your favorite feelings, items, sentiments, and mementos from home to your work desk and environment.

Bringing ‘Home’ to Work…

  • Coffee Routine: While caffeinated drinks certainly don’t jive with everyone, curating my perfect cup of coffee is admittedly my morning highlight. I encourage you to find a reason to get excited every morning; maybe your cup of coffee takes the form of a bagel, bowl of yogurt, cup of fruit, smoothie, matcha, tea, or simply water… whatever it is, make it uniquely yours. I specifically enjoy K-cups, with Trader Joe’s chocolate oat milk and a tablespoon of cinnamon (sometimes with a spoonful of collagen when I’m feeling extra motivated). Spending an extra few moments to feel like a barista makes coffee an activity to look forward to instead of another task to complete, it’s all about framing it in your mind. Especially if you’re returning to work, having a ‘sweet treat’ to bring on the go as your commute is a fantastic way to jump-start your day with positivity and delight.
  • Pictures! Smiling at a picture of my puppies is always a pleasant and shining moment in my day. Think about printing or collecting a bunch of pictures of your favorite things (activities, restaurants, vacation spots, memories, family, and friends) to serve as a visual reminder of why we work…. to live (and certainly not the other way around)! Printing photos at places like Walgreens or UPS is a super cost-effective way to DIY a collage that can hang at your desk, sit within a frame, and provide you joy throughout the work day.
  • Candles and Scents: Another way that I make my space as pleasant as can be is by lighting a candle each morning when I sit down. Crafting a perfect scent to blanket the room and my space makes my day feel curated, custom, and exactly what fits my preferences. This could look like incense, candles, wall plug-ins, flowers, or whatever else you need to feel your best in your space – be mindful of how physically close your desk is to others in the office for this one. But, if you can find an isolated space or set an agreement about scents with your teammates, you can curate an ‘office scent’ that mimics home as soon as today!
  • Colorful Pens and Sticky Notes: This may sound pretty niche, but I find unexpected pleasure in writing in colorful pens, crafting notes on colored stickies, and making my space colorful. Whether these details impact your mood and productivity is, of course, a personal preference, but I would definitely recommend it! It is also crucial that you identify the most productive way that you can retain information – whether this is on your computer, physically on a sticky, or even in a notebook, make sure to collect the materials that will allow you to accomplish your best work.
  • Cords, Plug-ins, and Technical Equipment: To wrap things up, in order to set yourself up for a smooth transition into an in-person office desk space, you must ensure that you have all the necessary materials handy to complete daily tasks. Whether this looks like your HDMI cord to link your laptop to a monitor, headphones that plug into your computer, or other equipment to ready your space, gather it all or request it from your company prior to your first physical day-in.

Welcome back, everyone! Today, we’re here to display a few of the most crucial elements of valued employees. Whether you’re looking to level up at work, improve your performance, or ensure you’re viewed as a valuable teammate, this is the article for you. Keep reading below to find out the key qualities of top-performing professionals.

Becoming a Top Performer…

  1. Exude High Emotional Intelligence: Cultivating the ability to be able to understand, analyze, and observe the behaviors of those who surround you both in your office and personal life will aid you immensely in catering to people’s needs. Doing so will allow you to be the best “audience member” or leader that you can be, and, therefore, will attract others to you. People love to be understood, as it helps save them the time it takes to explain their feelings! Think about it, how much faster could you complete projects if you could anticipate people’s reactions?
  2. Express Interest in Conversation: There is no better way to become likable than by helping others feel valued, and it is super easy to do so! Especially in conversations, always make sure that you are maintaining eye contact, holding an enthusiastic and kind tone, and expressing friendly, warm body language. Additionally, express curiosity and interest by asking questions or clarifying points throughout the conversation!
  3. Keep an Open Mind: Those who are open-minded are sure to develop higher-quality relationships with their coworkers and teammates. Helping others feel safe in their work environments, without the fear of judgment, will allow you and everyone around you to express yourselves and reach your greatest creative potential! Although an idea may seem unattainable at first glance, it may very well become your finishing product.
  4. Always Respect Others: No matter how you may disagree, always make sure to maintain a notable level of respect with anyone you encounter. There are several effective, appropriate mechanisms for handling disagreements or debates, and there is no reason to ever resort to a disrespectful demeanor. Showcasing consistent respect for others will elevate how attractive you are to work with and be around, causing you to become more likable!
  5. Manage Your Temper: As we’ve stated in the past, you will undoubtedly encounter frustration at work. However, you must maintain composure and an appropriate attitude. Not only will this show others that you are capable of overcoming challenges, but it will help you portray one of your most excellent qualities, your coping skills! Someone who can maintain composure when faced with adversity is a strong leader and an attractive coworker.
  6. Stay True to Yourself, and Do the Right Thing! We hope it goes without saying that breaking the rules or finding loopholes in order to achieve success will only come back to hurt you. However, there are many other ways to always do the right thing. Whether this means returning back a coffee to someone you “owe,” taking someone out to lunch, congratulating others, giving credit where it is due, owning up to your mistakes, or maintaining honesty even in difficult situations, enforcing these actions will allow you to flourish among others.
  7. Embrace Change: A valued mentor once told me, employees who encounter change and embrace it without complaints are those that will go farthest within a company. Remember, everyone in the corporate world will undoubtedly encourage a scenario that they didn’t plan for. The question isn’t what happened, but instead how it was handled… so make sure to always put your best foot forward and showcase resilience and positivity wherever possible.
