Welcome back, everyone! As we spoke about last week, the months following college graduation are quite ambiguous for most students. Many of you have become accustomed to living on your own over the past years, and as a result, hope to try on a new city or “flee the nest” right after graduation. While we spoke about some financial benefits of living at home, we thought it fair to show you the other side of the coin! If you’re toying with the idea of relocation, keep reading below to find out our pro tips as to why you should go for it.

Benefits of Relocating Post-Grad…

  • Developing Independence: While college is undoubtedly a phenomenal resource that allows students to experience independence for the first time, living on your own in a different city will provide even more opportunities for maturity and growth. Likely, you will be placing yourself in an environment without the cushion of dozens of friends, familiar professors and buildings, and even restaurants and coffee shops! For that reason, you may find yourself with new, unexpected responsibilities and opportunities: navigating grocery shopping, finding relaxation outlets, new exercise routes or studios, seeking new friendships or mentors, etc. This is an amazing time to put your skills to the test!
  • Dream Company: At least in my experience, I’ve found that some of my “dream” companies are located solely in California, New York, Austin, etc. So, if leaving your hometown allows you to pursue your absolute dream role, this is the time to do so! Working for a company that you’re passionate about will undoubtedly make a new city more enjoyable and fun, and it may allow you to explore an area of the U.S. that you hadn’t even previously considered!
  • New Start: A supernormal feeling that comes with college graduation is some time to reevaluate your current satisfaction with the people with who you surround yourself will. While not necessarily bad, it’s completely reasonable to feel as though you’ve outgrown your close circle, or that you’re in the market for a refresh. Moving to a new location will undoubtedly help you immerse yourself in a new culture and therefore surround yourself with people different and similar to yourself. Refreshing your social circle after graduation is a phenomenal reason to explore a new city, state, or region of the U.S. and beyond!
    • Extra tip: If you’re struggling to meet new people, check out Bumble BFF, Facebook Groups, the Geneva app, and other media avenues intended to bring new people together with a shared interest in developing a friendship! Trying out a new workout class, cafe, boutique, restaurant, or busy location while on your own is also a great way to push yourself out of your comfort zone and meet someone new. Always adopt a smile and a friendly face and you’re sure to connect with someone new!
  • Temporary Commitment: More now than ever before, companies are developing and offering rotational programs for graduates post-college. Accepting a role of this sort will provide you with an exceptional measure of testing out a new city with an expiration date in mind. One year, two years, or even a few months from now, you’ll be able to reassess your contentment with a city and potentially even relocate again!

Welcome back, everyone! Today, we’re here to refresh on a topic we’ve been covering since the start of the pandemic: working from home! Now that almost all of us, and if not us then likely a person we know, have transitioned their work to the virtual environment, it’s crucial to stay in tune with how to maintain motivation and engagement through your screen. If you’re still WFH full-time or in a hybrid format, this article is for you. Keep reading here to find out our best tips for staying engaged no matter where you work…

Stay Engaged: Working From Home Edition…

  • Fitness: It’s no shock that those who work from home are less likely to be active during their day! Without being forced to commute or leave their four walls, it’s easy to fall into a pattern of sitting and not doing. However, as we’ve encouraged you in the past, being the caloric benefit, exercise helps to decrease stress, increase energy, and overall optimize your physical and emotional well-being! So, whether it looks like going to the gym, outside on a walk, engaging in an at-home video, lifting weights, working with a trainer, or anything else, stay moving! You might even work for a company that provides monetary incentives as a benefit for staying healthy – so make sure to look into how they are investing in your health starting today!
  • Virtual team-building: While not always ideal (let’s be honest here!), it’s still key to relationship building to offer and participate in virtual team-building events. Whether this is a virtual happy hour, escape room, mystery game, scavenger hunt, mixology class, game night, or what have you, make sure to come with a positive attitude and a smile. Those of you who participate in these types of events undoubtedly retrieve the most value from WFH environments and build ever-lasting connections with coworkers and leadership alike.
  • Optimize your WFH setup! Again, you may not know it, but many companies offer benefits in the form of compensation for at-home offices. So, look into how to derive the most value out of your benefits package by embedding some key attributes of a functional space into your home today:
    • Laptop or several monitors and keyboard
    • Quality headphones or earbuds
    • Adjustable standing desk or treadmill desk if people prefer to work standing up or want to work out a bit
    • An ergonomic and comfortable chair
    • Hardware accessories, such as webcam and wireless device charging station
    • Ring light to better show people’s faces on video calls
  • Learning opportunities: Take advantage of online opportunities to increase your professional skills and competency! Many courses can be found on Udemy, Development internal websites, and more. Even LinkedIn, Amazon, and Google offer several free-to-access programs for you to enjoy and utilize!
  • Prioritizing mental well-being: Finally, we all know that being isolated in a virtual format can be damaging to one’s mental well-being. So, always factor in times for breaks, outdoor walks, re-fueling with a full lunch, and other pockets of “you time.” While we all know the urgency of work obligations, at the end of the day, remind yourself that the world will go on without you meeting one deadline! And never be too hard on yourself, we’re all trying our best out here!

The months following college graduation are quite ambiguous for most students. Many of you have become accustomed to living on your own over the past years, and the thought of transitioning back into your old household may not appear the most enticing choice. However, the financial benefits of living at home, as well as a few more that we will list below, may convince you to consider this option. Especially for those of you on the job hunt – it’s important to evaluate these advantages!

Saving Money!

  • Rent-Free Living: In most cases, living at home means that you will be able to avoid the costs of rent that come with cities. If you are looking to save up for your first apartment’s rent, staying at home for a few months will help you set aside a substantial amount of money that you can use to create a stable, prepared future.
    • Extra Tip: Don’t just talk about saving, do it! Set a strict monthly amount to hold yourself accountable; that way, you will force yourself to “walk the walk” and take action.
  • Other Ways to Save:
    • Use your money saved from rent to invest in stocks, bonds, or other investments!
    • Start paying off student loans.
    • Ensure that you have a positive, strong credit score.
    • Begin thinking about your future budget; plan out an estimate of monthly expenses so as to prepare for your future move out.

Other Home Benefits . . .

  • Utilizing Home Network: Placing yourself back into a setting surrounded by loving family members, old friends, or neighbors will allow you to use your network while searching for a new position. You never know which old relationship may provide you with your next opportunity! Remember, it is always important to be constantly working to make connections and expand your network in the business world. Living at home is a great head start!
  • Time to Plan: It is likely that your last semester in college was filled with job applications, last-minute exams or projects, and most certainly, lots of celebrations! We understand that you may feel as though you haven’t had a moment to yourself to start seriously considering your professional opportunities and hopes for your career. Settling back in at home will provide you significant time to reflect on your desires and start planning to make them a reality.
  • Try Out Something New: Maybe being at home will allow you to finally try out that new hobby you’ve been thinking about for years! Make sure you are keeping yourself busy so as to stay motivated. Other ideas include art classes, cooking classes, new workouts, or even some outdoor activities like kayaking, canoeing, or paddleboarding.
  • Family! Let’s not forget, that you’ve likely been away from your family for years! It’s crazy how much a few months will allow you to spend quality time with those you love while doing things you love with your newfound free time. While we encourage you to continue your job search throughout this time, we hope you recognize the importance of taking advantage of these priceless moments…. especially… home-cooked meals!

Good afternoon, everyone! Today, we’re here to provide you with a few fun ideas and ways to spend your weekend in my hometown, Chicago. While some of these are taking place right now, other attractions are available (and often free!) year round – so to those of our national followers, this might be the perfect time for you to plan a trip to our Windy City!

Chicago Attractions:

  • Lollapalooza: One of the iconic moments of a Chicago summer is Lollapalooza. Whether you like rock, indie, country (sometimes), EDM, rap, or pop music… this is the place to be! This year, headliners like Dua Lipa and Green Day are taking the stage in just a few hours. If you’ve never been to Grant Park, this is certainly your reason to make a trip Downtown. We recommend buying tickets in advance when able, dressing for the weather, and hydrating throughout the day to account for walking through the festival grounds!
  • Randolph Street Market: Another awesome attraction that is set to return to Chicago after its Covid-based hiatus is the Randolph Street Market. Also found in the downtown area of the city, you can find antiques, vintage clothing, food, drinks, entertainment, and more at this fest! Make sure to stop by on July 30th or 31st to participate.
  • Taste of [Neighborhoods]: Additionally, while not necessarily tied to one place (Wicker, Chicago in general, Lincoln Ave, and more!), there are several “Taste of” events scattered throughout the warm summer months. Usually lined with other goodies and live music, these are often free and wonderful ways to spend your afternoon. Make sure to plan your transportation to the event and wear comfortable shoes! While most vendors have POS terminals, we also recommend having a bit of cash on hand to ease the process.
  • The Bean and the Magnificent Mile: As I’m sure you’ve heard of, one of the most tourist-centric areas is Millennium Park and specifically, “the Bean.” An enormous and shocking sculpture, the Bean is one of the visuals that remind people of our city. Make sure to take a bit of a walk or drive North and shop along the Magnificent Mile, home to the most populous stores in the city.
  • A walk on the Lakeshore Path or Chicago River: Finally, and also free, is walking along Lake Michigan or the Chicago River. There are several entry points to these walking paths throughout different neighborhoods, so a quick map search will direct you toward your closest route. Not only are the walks beautiful, but give a great opportunity to view the city and its buildings from far and from up close.

Welcome back, everyone! We hope you had a great weekend and are ready to re-charge for an equally great week. Today, we’re here to discuss the benefits of volunteering – especially at work. Many of us, without even knowing it, are incentivized through corporate programs to volunteer and give back to our communities. Whether your company has a donation match policy or offers events to engage in volunteering amongst coworkers, find out how to best prepare here!

Look into Volunteering Opportunities

First and foremost, in order to participate in a volunteering event, you must evaluate your options! At many companies, designated platforms are formed to encourage employees to volunteer, engage in events, connect with one another, and monetarily support foundations they feel passionate about. First look into the ways in which you can maximize donations through matching programs or through certain non-profits that your employer partners with. If you’re unsure where to start, a corporate responsibility report is a great way to learn about your company’s history of “walking the walk” when it comes to giving back. Otherwise, ask your hiring manager, boss, or teammates as a great way to find out how others have engaged in this benefit and how you can do the same!

Prepare for your Event!

  • Prepare: Preparing for a volunteer event is easy! Simply follow the steps below and you’re sure to have a smooth and enjoyable day. Always ensure that your work that day is complete and you are not sacrificing any deadlines as a result of the event. Even if this means working a bit more on the days prior, it’s key to be able to unplug and take advantage of your entire volunteering experience while there.
    • Alert your team or take PTO! While volunteering events usually ladder into regular work hours, this may not always be the case! Check-in with your manager to set clear expectations of your absence and account for any required PTO hours.
  • Dress the part: Additionally, remember that you are representing the company you work for at these events! Dressing appropriately, wearing closed-toed shoes (no logos or graphics!), and adhering to company policy as you would in the office are important at an offsite event. Make sure to be on the lookout for emails leading up to the event that will absolutely clarify dress expectations, whether, the activity you’re participating in, and if you should be wearing a company shirt.
  • Bring a lunch, snacks, and water: The email that clarifies the dress code will likely also give you a list of what to bring and what to expect at the event. This may mean that water and snacks are provided or a full-catered luncheon! Whatever it is, it’s important to be prepared soo that you can last through the entire event without fatigue. Volunteering often looks like physical labor, so being fully energized and having food/water on hand is crucial to staying engaged.
  • Organize transportation: Finally, don’t leave logistics until the morning of! If you are required to travel for the day, look into company shuttles, stipends, or modes of transportation. If not, find your most accessible route and coordinate with a coworker when able! Always allow for extra time and arrive early to get settled and excited.

Good morning, everyone! We hope that you are enjoying days of sunshine, outdoor time, and spending outside work hours with friends and family. If I’ve noticed one thing about friends of mine and even my family – it’s that the summer days bring… golf! And a lot of it! If you are interested in getting some practice in golf and learning the “rules of the road” when it comes to playing, you’re in the right place. Especially for those of us at companies that sponsor golf outings or if golfing is a significant attribute to your client relationships – it is crucial to be able to know the etiquette expected on the course.

Learning the Basics of Golf…

  • Dress the part: How you dress is often one of the first things someone will notice about you! For women, a longer skirt or golf pants and a collared shirt are appropriate. For men, nice shorts or pants, and a collared shirt are expected on the course – this means that the backward hats, swim trunks, jerseys, muscle tees, or regular t-shirts can stay at home. A great way to envision your dress should be “business professional x Golf” – while you may not wear the same outfit in the office as on the golf, dressing the part means dressing appropriately to surround yourself with leadership, teammates, and employees across the organization.
  • Make sure you arrive early: As applies to most things in life, make sure that you are respecting other people’s time and always be on time for your tee time. Especially for those of us new to the course, make sure to arrive early so that you can make yourself comfortable, get organized, and rest for a moment before you get going.
  • All electronics – off: You should not be using your phone during your time on the course. Make sure that you turn it off or at least turn your ringer off. Avoiding any scenario during which your phone could ring in the middle of a client’s or teammate’s swing is a key to being successful and pleasant.
  • Keep your temper under control and be aware of your volume level: Although golf can be a frustrating game, you want to keep your cool. You may be hitting the ball every way except the fairway as a beginner. No matter what happens, you always keep your composure and keep going! Golf is a great way to see how someone can deal with adversity. So, after a bad shot, pick your head up, laugh it off, and get ready for the next one! Under no circumstance should you throw your club or start yelling and cursing – and this also goes for your volume level. As you’ll quickly notice, golf is a relatively quiet spot, and replicating your volume surroundings is a great way to show your etiquette.

Welcome back, everyone! Today, we’re here to help provide tips that you can use to connect to your coworkers or to peers participating in your internship program. Even in a hybrid world, it may feel challenging at times to build meaningful connections. However, by following the steps below, we’re sure that you can build meaningful relationships in no time!

Let’s Connect…

Reaching Out:

The first step, which we are sure you could guess, is becoming vulnerable and reaching out to others! Whether this means tracking down a cell number, emailing another coworker, chatting with peers from an online platform like Microsoft teams, whatever form you can connect… use it! Odds are, if you’re struggling to connect with others, so are they, and we know that tackling an internship or other work-life challenges with buddies is better than navigating alone. So, remind yourself that even though you might feel a bit nervous or uncomfortable, the benefit of putting yourself out there will far outweigh that “cost.” When reaching out, make sure to portray an excited tone, openness to studying or otherwise connecting over course material, and a bit of an introduction about yourself to pass the stranger barrier (name, hometown, year, major, etc.)!

Discussion Participation:

Another great way to seamlessly connect with others without the formality of an email or letter is through online discussion platforms. This may look like a zoom breakout room, organized Teams meeting, or even an after-work activity like a happy hour. Whatever it is, remember to participate and contribute to the conversation – ask questions and be an active listener. Not only does doing so ease others and increase their engagement, but it is the first step to meeting students and building friendships. We encourage you to also be mindful of balance! If the same intern or peer is orchestrating almost all meetings and get-togethers, make sure to contribute and make your presence known! Matching others’ energy and effort is an amazing strategy for creating mutually valued relationships.

Utilize Employee Resource Groups/Orgs.:

Almost all companies have developed meaningful employee resource groups specifically for your own benefit and means of connecting! Reach out to your fellow peers and encourage involvement at a program level. As you already share a piece of identity through involvement, creating these connections will prove easier than any other. In today’s age, most orgs. even have online profiles on groups like Facebook or Yammer, so we encourage you to start a master post and make some connections today.

Do you think about work when you get home for the day or take your work home with you every night? In today’s world, it is normal to have work hours that stray from the typical 9-5. The lines might feel blurred on whether or not you should continue some work at home or leave it in the office.  If you don’t want to bring your work home or feel bogged down by work, continue reading! Today, we’re going to talk about some ways to stop thinking about work when you are done for the day.

  1. Write it down: A great way to get your mind off work is to journal or write down how you are feeling. If you do this exercise right when you get home from work, it will help clear your mind.
  2. Distract yourself: The end of your day should be time used for yourself, not thinking about what’s going on at work. Do an activity that you genuinely enjoy. This might be cooking, watching tv, working out, playing a game, going for a walk, etc. The options can be endless. Choose something that will take your full attention so you can truly relax.
  3. Turn everything off: A great way to unplug from work is to literally turn off your devices. Log out of your work email or shut down your computer. Doing this will limit your need to feel like you have to reply if you get an email after hours or if something comes up. If you aren’t obligated to be reachable after hours, turn off your devices and log out of everything!

Escaping work can seem impossible sometimes. A lot of studies show that we need downtime from work because it helps our minds reboot and even makes us more productive. Sometimes when we don’t think about a certain problem for a while, we come back refreshed, ready, and with new ideas. Read below to find out some things you should do in the future to make sure you don’t stress about working after hours.

  1. Lists: A couple of hours before you leave the office for the day create a list. The list can include projects and tasks you have already accomplished and then tasks that still need to be completed before the end of the day. This is a useful organization tactic for your mind and what you need to get done. By creating this list, it gives you something to look at the following day to see what still needs to be accomplished.
  2. Update people: Right as you leave, you can make an out-of-office reply to your email. This way, when people email you, they know you have left for the day and their email won’t be returned until the morning. This is a great literal way to send the message that you are done working for the day.
  3. No Work Zone: When you get home for the day, establish a space in your home where you do not allow yourself to work. For example, you may only allow yourself to work in your home office, so every other space is for leisure time. This will help you establish boundaries within yourself.

Our culture is constantly on the go and very time-oriented. This can make people feel like they need to be reachable 24/7, but that isn’t the case. Use the strategies above to give yourself downtime from your workday

Welcome back, everyone! Today, I am returning from approximately 2 weeks of “PTO” in Europe where I had super limited access to email. As a result, and as I’m sure many of you have experienced, my inbox is flooded and I am quickly attempting to organize, group tasks, and align with teammates on what I’ve missed and how I can be of help to catch myself up to speed. If you are taking a vacation this summer, planning a long PTO due to another form of leave, or otherwise behind on work tasks, look no further! Today, we are here to debrief, train, and prepare you to get back on track at work…

Playing Catch-Up!

  • Set a Routine: Above anything else, setting a routine that you can rely on to play catch-up will help you stay organized, timely, and productive. Whether this means breakfast, exercise, time-blocking technique, or setting up an array of meetings, any organizational tactic will prove to benefit you in the long run.
  • Early Wake-Ups: We know this isn’t everyone’s ideal plan, and many of us dread that 7:00 AM wake-up call. However, in the week or so (usually a time period equivalent to your break) following Thanksgiving, Christmas, the Fourth of July, etc., it will prove immensely valuable to your schedule to take back an hour of the day that you may regularly use for sleep. You’ll be surprised at your body’s ability to work hard and function even on a lower quantity of sleep over temporary time periods; this could be an especially great resource for catching up.
  • New Atmosphere: Just as it is easy to fall out of routine when you return home or to a place outside of your regular environment, it is just as easy to get all too comfortable in a place over time. Whether this is a coffee shop, your room, a specific library or classroom, or any working space that you’ve found, it’s almost subconscious that we start to become less focused and more comfortable in a repetitive space. For that reason, we encourage you to at least try out a new space one-time post-break and test your productivity. Sometimes all it takes is a new atmosphere to stimulate work and motivation!
  • Go Easy on Yourself: One last tip… always make sure to be easy on yourself after a break! There is no reason to ever regret the time you spent with loved ones or the extra sleep you caught upon. It was deserved and it was enjoyable! Allow yourself breaks and make sure to get enough sleep still so as to maintain productivity.

By allowing yourself ample time to catch up, reorganizing your routine temporarily, and supporting yourself both physically and mentally, you will be sure to catch up on any missed work in no time!

Searching for a new position? Open to exploring? Itching to know what’s available in the market? If any of the above sounds like you,…. Make sure to check out our FULL open jobs list!

Hello, everyone! While everyone is getting back into traveling, I thought today would be the perfect time to dive into tips and tricks for anyone hoping to get the most out of their trip overseas. Even if you are not seeking a long-term vacation, planning a weekend trip to any location, near or far, requires effective preparation and planning. So, keep reading to find out exactly what you should do to accomplish your goal…

Selecting a Location…

  • Evaluate the type of trip you’re seeking: The first step of planning your weekend comes down to deciding what kind of trip you’re seeking: a relaxing vacation, cultural exploration, historical journey, etc… Once you’ve got that idea down, you’ll have a much easier time narrowing in on a location.
  • Compare flight costs against different weekends: A quick Google flight search will help you compare your flight costs depending on a variety of weekends. If there is a large gap in price from this weekend vs. a few more weekends out, it may be beneficial to delay that certain location to a future date.
  • Check Airbnb and/or hotel availability: Before jumping into the planning stage, it’s crucial to check for availability and places to stay. This may lead you to a hostel, hotel, or Airbnb, but you must check these out before booking flights. As there are large price changes on weekends for flights, there are also high fluctuations in lodging costs.
  • Always try to book flights and lodging as far in advance as possible! Although it sometimes appears like a hassle or is easily procrastinated, you will almost always save money and a headache by doing so.

Planning Ahead…

  • Second evaluation of the trip you’re seeking: Now that you’re in the “fun” stage… it’s time for your second evaluation. Do you want a jam-packed weekend full of sightseeing, a relaxing few days to chill out, or a “go with the flow” walk through a new city? Whichever of these types of trips you choose, it’s time to start scheduling a loose itinerary.
  • Itinerary: An aspect of weekend travel that I became aware of quite immediately was the benefit of mapping the distance between sites you want to see EARLY ON! This is an easy mistake to avoid, as accidentally placing two locations that are far away from each other back-to-back on an itinerary may lead you to lose several hours of the few days you have… So, start looking into certain shops, experiences, tours, sites, restaurants, or other places you’re hoping to see and how they are spaced amongst one another before touching down on your trip.
  • Budget! Finally, it is always important to maintain an awareness of your spending on each trip. Some places are inherently more expensive than others, so saving costs on lodging/travel vs. picking up souvenirs are great ways to stay in line with a similar budget on each trip.

Searching for a new position? Check out our open jobs list!

Welcome back, everyone! It is more often the case than not that, at work, your promotions (lateral or vertical), projects, teams, roles, responsibilities, and all other job functions will likely require the input of another person or team. Working alongside coworkers, motivating and supporting one another, and understanding respective strengths and weaknesses is an important key to success. Today, we’re here to showcase some of the key reasons why you should also work to be a fantastic advocate for others, and in turn expect the same support – keep reading to find out how and why you should do so!

How to Advocate for Others…

  • Provide with Concrete Evidence: When you are advocating for someone else, remember that you are also putting yourself on the line by showcasing your opinion and the strength of your beliefs. For that reason, make sure to be able to identify and lay out specific reasons as to why this person is qualified for a new role, project, promotion, etc. By doing so, you are providing concrete evidence and solid reasons to allow your audience to envision this person in a new position or role.
  • Speak Clearly and Without Bias: In relation to our point above, being able to provide concrete evidence and pinpoint specific traits of others will allow you to appear completely unbiased and clear in your opinion. Especially if you are advocating for a close friend, family member, or mentee, it is essential to help the person that you can speak to their qualities as a professional instead of someone you have a close relationship with.
  • Always Mean It! We hope that this goes without saying, but always remember that your opinion is highly valuable and should be used in cases when you are most strongly opinionated! Advocate for others when you are sure of both your opinion and their qualifications. Do not feel pressured to speak for someone when you feel that they may need more practice, time, or skill development before advancing to a new position or workload. Always speak up when you mean it and when it matters.

Why You Should Advocate…

  • Reciprocation! Undoubtedly, you will encounter numerous advocates for yourself throughout your life. One of the greatest reasons for supporting others is in returning the favors that are done for you! Remember that people stepped up and often out of their comfort zone because they believed in your capabilities. When you feel the same for someone else, make your opinion heard.
  • Opportunities: You never know when you may find yourself working on a team either with or for someone you’ve supported in the past. Even more so, you never know when this same person may advocate for your promotion to or on their team as well. Keep in mind the opportunities associated with networking, and as a result, often advocating and supporting others.

It is crucial to your own fulfillment to be able to support others and contribute to their happiness as well as your own! Keep in mind throughout your career these people you feel passionate about supporting and confident in their qualities.

If Memorial Day Weekend got you feeling ready for another summer vacation, look no further! Keep reading below to find out the best ways to initiate, plan ahead, and execute time off from work as effortlessly as possible. Especially for those of us who live in climates with long winters and cold months, it is so important to take advantage of your benefits and PTO by planning out some time for R&R and to enjoy being outdoors!

Communicate and Anticipate:

If you are planning to ask for time off, make sure to read any company policies in order to make sure you are following all guidelines. For example, if your company requires that you give notice of your request at least 4 weeks prior to your desired vacation, plan as far ahead as possible to be able to do so and request the dates that work best for YOU! It’s always better to ask way ahead of time so as to ensure that your manager will have time to prepare for your absence and allocate your assignments to other employees.

Tips on How and When to Ask:

  • Ask during “down” times: This may seem obvious, but make sure you are asking at a time that is both right for you and for the company. If you are swamped with projects, wait until the busy period is over and everything has cooled down (keep this in mind for your boss as well – if they are super busy, leaving in the midst may leave a negative impression on the team). In the summer, downtime often wraps around the July 4th weekend and both work weeks before and directly after.
  • Prepare: If you know that you are going on your vacation soon, make sure all of your work is complete beforehand. Even if this requires some extra hours in the office, they will pay off in the future by showing your teammates that you care to leave them in a secure position to take on some of your responsibilities.
  • Communicate: On the same note as leaving minimal work to your teammates, make sure to communicate (through email or other written dialogue) to all appropriate parties that you’re leaving and when. That way everyone will know what to expect once you’re gone!
  • Collaborate with your coworkers: There will always be “popular” times to take off work. Divide these days up and work as a team with your coworkers to maximize each employee’s satisfaction.
  • Extra note for new employees: Remember that if you are new to a job, you are expected to be prepared, productive, and most importantly, present. We recommend that you do not ask for time off within the first several months of your job if you can avoid it.

Hi everyone, and welcome back from the holiday weekend! We hope that you all found some time to relax, reset, and enjoy our entry into summer. Today, we wanted to extend a message that Scott, our CEO, and President, shared with us last Friday.

“At the end of my monthly business owners networking meeting, someone is responsible for sharing a positive message. I loved today’s message and would like to share it with all of you. Perhaps you have read this before and if so, great to read again.  If not- enjoy and I hope that you see the same value when reading “How Do You Live in the Present”…

The Message Reads as Follows…

How Do You Live in the Present?

By Arlin Cuncic: Updated on November 10, 2021

Most of us have a tendency to live in the past or the future. How often do you find yourself thinking about what happened yesterday, or what might happen tomorrow? How does this affect your life and well-being?

In this article, we will discuss how to live in the present moment more frequently, and some ways that can help you get back into living mindfully.

Notice Your Surroundings

One way to be in the present moment is by noticing your surroundings. How often do you take time out of your day to actually look around and see what’s going on? When was the last time you sat down, closed your eyes, took a deep breath, and just looked at everything around you?

Take this opportunity right now: close both of your eyes and take a deep breath, then open them and really take in where you are.

How do the walls look?

What about the floor or ceiling—what patterns can you see there?

How many windows are there to your left and right?

How many lights can you count from here?

When you stop to look at your surroundings and take in everything around you, it’s easier to live in the present moment.

Focus on One Thing at a Time (Don’t Multitask)

While it may feel more productive to multitask and work on more than one thing at a time, constantly juggling multiple tasks makes it hard to live in the present moment. While doing something that requires your full attention can seem overwhelming at first, be aware of how much more productive you are when fully engaged in a task. Compare this with trying to squeeze multiple things into one period of time or spending half of your energy on three different projects.

If you’re working on something, give it all of your attention. When you find yourself thinking about other things or checking your phone because you don’t feel like doing the task at hand, stop and turn that focus back to what’s in front of you. Research shows that when you are fully focused on what’s happening at that moment, you can better remember details in the long term anyway.1

Be Grateful For What You Have Now

Part of living in the present moment is taking the time to be grateful for what you have now (not in the past or in the future).2 If you are constantly focused on things you don’t have, you aren’t taking the time to appreciate what you have right now at this moment.

One way to practice gratitude is to write a list of things you are grateful for and review that list on a daily basis. Try to write at least three things you are grateful for in your life right now. Alternatively, you can do a gratitude rampage, where you write out as many things as you can think of in a certain time period.

Accept Things As They Are (Not How You Want Them to Be)

If you want to start living in the present moment, you need to let go of how you think things should be and accept them for what they are. You cannot control everything that happens around you; sometimes life is going to be different than how you want it to be. Practicing acceptance will help you let go of the things in your life that are out of your control.

Practice Mindfulness Meditation

One way to live more in the present moment is by practicing mindfulness meditation.3 This type of meditation helps people become aware and increase their concentration on what they are doing at any given time. Starting a daily meditation practice can help you become more aware of your thoughts and feelings, which can in turn increase the amount of time that you spend in the present moment. Mindfulness Meditation Techniques for Stress Relief

Spend Time With People Who Make You Feel Happy and Fulfilled

Spending time with people who make you feel happy and fulfilled can be a great way to help yourself live in the present moment. Surrounding yourself with positive, supportive people will increase your own positivity and happiness levels. In turn, this will allow you to focus on what is going well right now instead of dwelling on past or future events.

Be Mindful of Everything You Do

Whatever you are doing from eating to scrolling your phone, you should be mindful of it. How often are you eating your lunch while watching TV at the same time? This is one way you might distance yourself from what you are doing and not live in the present moment because all of your attention isn’t on that task or activity.

Instead, try to focus on each meal while you eat.

How does the food smell? How does it taste? How is your body reacting to what you have eaten so far? What sounds are around while you eat – phone calls, traffic noises from outside, music playing in the background?

Focusing on these details and being mindful of everything going on around you during a specific task or activity will help bring more present-moment awareness into your life.

Practice Deep Breathing Exercises

Taking the time to sit down and practice a deep breathing exercise will help you focus your mind on the task at hand. Taking slow, regulated breaths helps to prevent feelings of panic or any other negative thoughts from taking over while allowing for more control during the activity in which you are currently engaged. One quick and easy method to try is the 4-7-8 breathing technique.

Take a Break From Social Media and Technology

Taking a break from social media and other technology can also help you to stay more present-focused. While you might think that constantly checking your social media accounts is helping you stay connected to the world, it is actually having a negative effect on your ability to be present.

How many times have you been doing something else and found yourself checking social media? It’s important that you learn how to avoid letting technology take over your life as this can really prevent you from being mindful of what is going on around you.

In particular, when you are with other people, it is important that you focus on the people and environment around you, rather than being distracted by your cell phone.

Get Regular Exercise or Do Some Yoga

Regular exercise or even just taking a stroll through the park can help you to stay more focused on your present activities. Including yoga as part of your daily routine is another great way to live in the present, especially if it’s coupled with meditation and mindfulness exercises.

If you can’t make time for all full yoga class, just stopping what you are doing to take a couple of minutes for some basic poses can help you to get back into the moment.

A Word From Very well

In conclusion, living in the present moment requires that you take the time to appreciate where you are, what you’re doing, and who is with you. Instead of becoming caught up in the past or worrying about what will happen in the future, try to savor each moment as it passes. If you need help with this process, talking to a therapist can be very helpful. They can give you tools and techniques that may make living in the present easier for you.”

What a great reminder of such valuable practices to live by and structure our days around – have a great week!

Searching for a new position? Check out our open jobs list!

Welcome back to the blog, everyone! While a lot of us may be seeking new opportunities (friendly reminder to check out our MANY open jobs!), it is finally becoming a realistic expectation that we will be heading into our roles, responsibilities, and teams in person. And what does that mean? Well, it’s time to get used to and back into commuting to your work locations! Even if you are operating in a hybrid format, it’s crucial to nail your plan for the days you are “going in” to optimize your schedule, routine, and time spent at home in the morning. Keep reading to find out all of the potential options that will allow you to effortlessly move from home to the office!

Let’s Commute to Work…

  1. Train: First and foremost, the commute we’re all probably envisioning. The train is a commute as old as time, and a great way to navigate any city and even many suburbs. Locating your closest line, and also communicate that to your company in case you are eligible for certain benefits or stipends (often in the form of reimbursements or supplemental credits towards passes like CTA) is a great way to take advantage of your benefits package and get moving! The train is not only convenient but quick and a hands-free approach to commuting to your job.
  2. Bus/Shuttle: Often, a bus/shuttle will be paired with your train ride in the case that your stop is still a few blocks or miles away from your office. Check with your company to identify whether or not they provide a company shuttle specifically for employees (many do!) and how to best navigate the timing to take advantage of this benefit. If your office is within a few miles of your home, taking a quick bus and locating a walkable stop might save you more time than even taking the train! Again, see if your role is eligible for compensation surrounding transportation to take financial advantage where applicable.
  3. Divvy/Electric Bike: For us in Chicago, I’m sure you have heard of the term “Divvying” by now – what does that mean?! Through the Lyft app or in its own app called “Divvy,” Chicagoans are offered the opportunity to simply scan a QR code placed on a bike, unlatch from its lock, and go! If your commute is within a few miles, on safe streets, and accessible, this may be a perfect option for you! Taking advantage of a method that allows for fresh air and some exercise is a phenomenal way to kick off your day.
  4. Personal Car: Another option that may suit you if you’re looking for some alone time in the morning is by traveling in a personal vehicle. For our college students… if this sounds like you, make sure that your future apartment either provides parking, directs you to a near parking facility, or is situated near street parking! Make sure to weigh the costs and benefits with this option, as monthly city parking adds up quickly and gas mileage may too. However, driving a personal car to your company is undoubtedly a quick, convenient, clean, and peaceful route to work!
  5. Walk! Finally, if you’re someone with the pleasure of living within a few blocks or miles from work, walking is not only a fantastic way to jumpstart your morning but an exercise in and of itself! We recommended bringing work clothes and changing once you are there if you think you’ll work up a sweat. This alternative is a fantastic way to pack in a few steps, maybe a podcast, and some fresh air all before your workday even begins.

If you read any of our recent posts about new and open jobs, then this article is for you! Itching to apply? Haven’t experienced being a candidate in a few years? Keep reading below to find out how to refresh and prepare to be the best interviewer that you can be!

How to Prepare to Apply to New Jobs…

  • As Early as Possible! Yes, that’s correct! If you have not yet started sending out applications, go ahead and do so today. Getting your name in the door or starting to reach out and utilize your network is essential to getting through the application process.
  • Do Your Research: You absolutely must conduct research about all job opportunities! Many online platforms offer a variety of resources to explore jobs in certain industries, cities, levels of seniority and experience, etc. For example (to our students), Handshake is a common website where companies are given the opportunity to post their job opportunities on an online platform for college students. Applications may be as easy as clicking a button and submitting a resume – so make sure to exhaust all options here (especially on LinkedIn)! Remember, these are free resources sitting at your fingertips that you can access from the comfort of your home, so make sure to use them whenever they are available to you.
  • Practice Your Elevator Pitch: Even if you feel that you will be able to produce an elevator pitch on the spot, we encourage you not to do so. With phone calls and interviews naturally come nerves, and nerves may lead to filler words, stuttering, stammering, and unprofessionalism when not practiced in advance. Keep your elevator pitch short and sweet, but definitely to the point! Include a brief intro to your experience, potential interests, and if there is time, a short reason as to why you were drawn to the company you are speaking with.
  • Plan an Interview Outfit: Showcase your dedication and care for presentation by dressing in business casual or professional clothing. Regardless of if your interview is taking place through a screen or in-person at an office, you’re guaranteed to help yourself stand out by treating all interactions equally and dressing the part of the way you hope to be perceived – professionally. You’ll be surprised by the extent of commonalities between the two formats, so the more you prepare, the better.
  • Be Ready Early: To anticipate inevitable technical challenges, like wavering Wi-Fi, poor connection, etc., make sure to log on much earlier than the anticipated interview so as to be able to mitigate as many barriers as possible. If you’re joining an interview in person, also make sure to leave an extra window of time to use the restroom, gather yourself, grab a glass of water, or even spend a few last minutes preparing for potential answers!

It is no doubt that being likable is the first step toward becoming an attractive teammate and cultivating relationships. In the business world, relationships are one of your key tools useful for attaining a successful career. So, what are the top 6 behaviors that will ensure you become a more likable teammate and direct report to management? Keep reading to find out!

Transform into an Optimal Employee…

  1. Exude High Emotional Intelligence: Cultivating the ability to be able to understand, analyze, and observe the behaviors of those who surround you both in your office and personal life will aid you immensely in catering to people’s needs. Doing so will allow you to be the best “audience member” you can be, and, therefore, will attract others to you. People love to be understood, as it helps save themselves the time it takes to explain how they are feeling! Think about it, how much faster could you complete projects if you could anticipate people’s reactions?
  2. Express Interest in Conversation: There is no better way to become likable them by helping others feel valued, and it is super easy to do so! Especially in conversations, always make sure that you are maintaining eye contact, holding an enthusiastic and kind tone, and expressing friendly, warm body language. Additionally, express curiosity and interest by asking questions or clarifying points throughout the conversation!
  3. Keep an Open Mind: Those who are open-minded are sure to develop higher-quality relationships with their coworkers and teammates. Helping others feel safe in their work environments, without the fear of judgment, will allow you and everyone around you to be able to express yourselves and reach your greatest creative potential! Although an idea may seem unattainable at first glance, it may very well become your finishing product.
  4. Always Respect Others: No matter how you may disagree, always make sure to maintain a notable level of respect with anyone you encounter. There are several effective, appropriate mechanisms for handling disagreements or debates, and there is no reason to ever resort to a disrespectful demeanor. Showcasing consistent respect for others will elevate how attractive you are to work with and be around, causing you to become more likable!
  5. Manage Your Temper: As we’ve stated in the past, you will undoubtedly encounter frustration at work. However, you must maintain composure and an appropriate attitude. Not only will this show others that you are capable of overcoming challenges, but it will help you portray one of your greatest qualities, your coping skills! Someone who can maintain composure when faced with adversity is a strong leader and an attractive coworker.
  6. Stay True to Yourself, and Do the Right Thing! We hope it goes without saying that breaking the rules or finding loopholes in order to achieve success will only come back to hurt you. However, there are many other ways to always do the right thing. Whether this means returning back a coffee to someone you “owe,” taking someone out to lunch, congratulating others, giving credit where it is due, owning up to your mistakes, or maintaining honesty even in difficult situations, enforcing these actions will allow you to flourish among others.
