Welcome back form the holiday weekend everyone! Now that daylight savings is fully in throttle, many of us are experiencing much more day light to fill our nights with. If you’ve been feeling restricted by the dark, or are itching to get back outside and engage in activities during your ‘5-9’ life – then this is the blog for you! Keep reading below to find out about some of our favorite post-work activities.

Activities for your 5-9!

  • Sports Game: No matter where you live, you’re likely within a few dozen (or fewer!) miles of your team’s sports arena. This might look like hockey, football, basketball, baseball, soccer, or more, but regardless of which sport you prefer, finding a friend and attending a professional sports game is a great treat. You can often find tickets as soon as a few minutes before and at a discounted price! So, if you’re looking to hype up your week and get your energy levels flowing, this is a perfect activity to get you started.
  • Cooking Class: In the interest of expanding skill sets and increasing our talent repertoire, we encourage you to locate your nearest cooking class, or even a free Youtube video to learn a new recipe tonight. As simple as a soup and as complex as a steak dinner, there are millions of resources across social media platforms like TikTok, Pinterest, Instagram, and Facebook, sitting at your fingertips to help train you on new cooking methods and skills. And if you’re looking to indulge even more, find a cooking class near you and learn live, in-person from a true expert.
  • Painting Class: If you’re interested in getting in tune with your creative side, a painting class is a great way to kick off another new hobby in the new year – so what’s stopping you in 2023? Grab a friend, coworker, mentor, partner, or roommate, or connect with someone you haven’t seen in a while over painting/crafting so as to get involved in an activity while spending quality time with someone you enjoy.
  • Concert, Open Mike Night, Comedy Show: These three activities are highly similar in the way that they provide entertainment, help introduce you to new music or comedy, and are a great venue to bring a whole bunch of friends. Many comedy shows are relatively inexpensive, and it’s easier than you’d think to track down a smaller concert venue (sometimes even within a regular bar!), especially on weeknights to find new music to love and follow. So, try out something new and that you might not normally attend by locating a neighborhood theater and seeing a show this week.
  • Walks!! Walking opportunities are endless in any city. Whether you now have the ability to walk home from the office with the extra sunshine, find your way to a nearby outdoor path or lake, or find a new friend to get to know over a leisure exercise, this is an invaluable activity to increase positive mental health, physical health, and a great way to pack in socialization to the work day.
  • Picnic Dinner: Maybe a bit early in anticipation of the Spring city, but if you’re reading this from somewhere warm, one of our favorite activities is as simple as grabbing a blanket and finding your nearest park, lake shore, field, or outdoor spot to hunker down for a casual dinner. Packing something to bring would make this activity essentially free, but grabbing or trying a new spot on the way is also a fun way to try something new this week.
  • Intramural Leagues: Ultimately, with more daylight comes increased safety and joy of being outside. So, as we gear up for some warmer months coming near, we encourage you to look into your local intramural leagues. Chicago Sport & Social club promotes many sports league for you to get involved in as soon as TODAY! Check out pickle-ball, volleyball, basketball, bowling, kickball, softball and MORE!

Welcome back, everyone! With a holiday weekend approaching for those celebrating in Chicago (and additional celebrations taking place all over the United States and beyond), we thought it would be fun to take a break from business-focused content and instead provide you with a few different ways to participate in the festivities below.

Let’s…Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day!

  • Attend the St. Patrick’s Day Chicago Parade: Taking place at Grant Park (337 E Randolph St, Chicago, IL) this Sat, Mar 11, 12:30 – 4:00 PM, and is one of the largest parades in the US! Our annual Chicago Parade showcases the green river and hosts a variety of floats and excitement that provides an awesome way to get out of the house, feel the cheer, and even serves as a great activity for families and children. Make sure to account for traffic in the area, transportation, and weather! It looks like a cold front is coming back toward the city quickly, so make sure to layer up to ensure a positive and pleasant experience.
  • Restaurant Events: Whether at the top of the building, on a floor with a view, or even in a conference center, many hotels provide celebrations in-house filled with food and drinks. Some to check out include: LondonHouse and The Godfrey.
  • Bar Tabs and Drink Deals: If you’re looking to hunker down at one location, many bars, in the same way as do restaurants, offer fantastic events, decked out in decorations and filled with a high-energy atmosphere and of course, many drinks. Some to check out include: Happy Camper, Homeslice, RPM Seafood, Bounce, Rizzo’s Bar & Inn, Fatpour, and more (note – these bars are all scattered across the entire city – so find the spot closest and most convenient for you!).
  • Bar Crawls: The last nod to a drinking day is participating in one of Chicago’s many bar crawls across the city. Whether River North’s Lucky Charms crawl, Wrigleyville’s Shamrock Crawl, Lincoln Park’s Lucky Charms crawl, or another, these crawls are guaranteed to take you all around the neighborhood and its most iconic spots. So, if you’re looking to hop around, meet new people, and try out new places, this is a great activity for you!
  • Walk along the River: One of the only times of year that the river takes on a new form – make sure to check it out as it’s fully dyed green. Bundle up, grab a friend, family member, or partner, and check it out from any raised rooftop or up close along the river walk.
  • Green Crafts and Fun! Finally, if you’re looking to escape the business of all of the city’s events this weekend, engaging in fun at-home St. Patrick’s Day-inspired crafts is a great way to cozy up and enjoy the day. Whether this is trying a latte crafting class (check out the blog’s pic as inspiration), doing a green coloring book, painting a new mug, trying out pottery, free-style painting a canvas, or any other artistic activity, finding something totally green is an awesome way to embrace the spirit of the holiday.

Remember, Daylight Savings is also coming near at 2:00 AM THIS Sunday, Mar 12, 2023!

With Daylight savings comes, obviously, more daylight to pack into our schedules. So, if you’re feeling a refreshed sense of motivation to take advantage of your 5-9 lifestyle (outside of works hours), then make sure to check in next week as we provide a whole bunch of opportunities, experiences, activities, and actions that YOU can take advantage of to continue your day.

Welcome back, everyone! We hope that you had a great weekend (mine was spent in Austin!), and are diving in head-first for the upcoming week ahead. With St. Patrick’s Day celebrations taking place over the next few weeks, and Spring activities slowly beginning to appear, we thought it would be a great time to remind you of a few ways to take a step back, relax, and relieve stress today. Keep reading to find out our favorite ways to relieve stress today!

Let’s…Relieve Stress!

  • Crafts: Let’s start with arts and crafts. We’ve encouraged you many times in the past but are here to nail this idea into your minds one more time… crafting is a key to relaxation! This may look like coloring, hands-on pottery, drawing, sketching, or even digital/online graphic design… it’s a personal and creative outlet that looks different for every participant. No matter how this manifests for you, we encourage you to explore this unique activity to trigger an often unused area of your brain!
  • Artistic Outlets: On that same note, engaging in artistic or musically-focused activities is a wonderful way to explore new hobbies and develop previously “unexercised” skills. This may mean music (like drumming, playing piano, or attempting guitar lessons), singing, acting, or engaging in performing arts. However, pushing ourselves into new environments and out of our comfort zone is a great way to segment your life away from pure work and a relaxing means of personal growth.
  • Get Outside: If you can take just a moment to watch the sunrise, step out for a cup of coffee, follow the sunset, or take a breath of fresh air, the scientific benefits of activating Vitamin D are unmatched! This does not have to look like a full-blown activity and may just be opening a window, but we are confident that it will be worthwhile no matter where your geographical location.
  • Exercise: Finally, we will continue to point out the positive effects of walking that have been proven to decrease stress and increase one’s ability to manage emotions. So, clear your mind, throw on your favorite podcast or music, and get moving! Even better, exercising through a walk (indoor or outdoor) is also a great way to incorporate some casual socialization into your day. Grab a friend, a partner, a colleague, or even a family member, and spend some time walking together, you’ll be amazed at the quality time you’ll achieve.
  • Check-in on Sleep Habits: It might sound obvious, but it is crucial to your stress levels that you maintain enough sleep each night. If you’re struggling to fall or stay asleep, try turning off screens earlier in your day, create a setting that allows for relaxation (think lighting, sounds, and scents!), and unplugging from your daily responsibilities to ensure you’re allowing wind-down time before simply expecting to fall right asleep.
  • Journal, Gratitude, Meditation, and Mindfulness: One of our favorite ways to stay grounded is by practicing any of these strategies to engage with a form of mindfulness and gratitude. Dedicating just a few minutes a day to journaling, saying things in your head or out loud that you’re grateful for, or researching meditation/mindfulness exercises is an amazing way to bring yourself back to real priorities and the aspects of your life that mean the most to you.

Welcome back, everyone! Today, we’re here to supply you with a bunch of tools through which you can organize your work day. Whether you’re planning for a return to hybrid or full in-person work format, working fully remotely, or in the office every day, following an organization strategy is key to creating daily consistency and ensuring that you are setting yourself up for daily success. Keep reading to find out about 4 main organizational strategies and identify the best fit for you and your role!

Organizing your Work Day…

  1. The MIT Method: Standing for “most important tasks first,” the MIT method focuses primarily on the prioritization of obligations and deadlines. It’s easy to log onto your computer and feel compelled to check emails or tackle other administrative-like tasks that are looming over your day. However, we encourage you to explore a new way to stimulate the start of your workday by categorizing your highest priorities and getting to them before all else! If anything, make sure to block out the time that you spend doing the more tedious types of tasks so that you don’t end up dedicating hours of filler time to work that could get done more quickly if given full attention (for example: going through emails every day from 9:00-10:00 AM instead of every hour or as they come in).
  2. A/B Scheduling: This technique brings me back to my days in high school, filled with “A” and “B” days splitting courses up throughout the week. In reflecting on this experience, I think that it poses a fantastic opportunity to refresh and recharge on new tasks without becoming fatigued. So, try out breaking up your priorities into two schedules, A and B. See if this allows you to recharge and come back with a fresh and rejuvenated mindset on a periodic basis instead of the repetition of one schedule for each day. For example, if you spend half of your days tracking projects towards deadlines, and the other half planning for new types of work, make sure to switch off so that you can mentally prepare for what the day holds and understand what to expect! Many roles are filled with a variety of responsibilities, so identifying them and separating them into buckets is a great way to stay focused and on track with deliverables.
  3. Energy Flow: Energy flow is presented with its title because it signifies 50-90 minute “sprint” work periods throughout the day. Let’s be honest, we are not our most productive selves 100% of the time throughout the workday. So, to combat dips in energy and a clouded mind, try out energy flowing through tasks! If you’re the most productive and awake in the morning, after lunch, at the end of the day, or whenever, fit your flows in here. And always make sure to give yourself breaks throughout the day to consistently recharge and remove yourself temporarily from screens!
  4. The Pomodoro Technique: Similar to a few of the other strategies, this technique utilizes 25-minute blocks of uninterrupted productivity on a single task. If you’ve been dreading an upcoming presentation, putting off a certain project, or otherwise need to sit and focus for a solid block of time, this is a great strategy for you. If you’re easily distracted by other tasks, this may be for you too!

Welcome back from the weekend, everyone! We hope that you feel rejuvenated, excited for a new week, and refreshed (especially in the midwest) by our Winter which is seemingly a relative Spring. I mean really, I’ve seen just a few days of snow so far entirely! Nonetheless, I know many of us are finding comfort in our homes and somewhat ‘hibernating’ throughout the cooler winter months. So, with the extra time you have indoors, there is no better opportunity than right now to conduct informational interviews and expand your knowledge of different business industries. Keep reading to find out how to derive the most value out of informational interviews…

Let’s… Connect! Conduct your Informational Calls by Following the below steps…

  • Preparation and Purpose: Before engaging in information phone calls, it’s crucial to conduct a quick search on the person’s background, and a light gauge of their current work so as to avoid taking a large portion of time dedicated solely to introductions. Make sure to prepare specific questions relating to their career trajectory, project success, company experiences, etc. If you could ask your prepared questions to anyone, that’s a sign that they are not meaningful enough for the person you’re speaking with.
  • Ask Specific Questions: As it relates to our point above, you should not be asking questions like, “How’d you get here?” or “So, what do you do?” If you’ve initiated a chat, it is likely for a specific purpose to learn more about a role. For example, if you’re speaking to someone on the public relations side of the business, focus questions around, “How have you handled our company’s relationship with X topic/company/etc.? How much of your time do you spend avoiding negative PR vs creating positive PR?” Always make the employee feel valued! After all, they dedicated a portion of their day specifically to you.
  • Thank Them for their Time! Always always always make sure to express gratitude to the person for taking up a part of their day to speak with you. Thank the person for discussing their role, opening up about a certain topic, offering advice or direction, etc. We also encourage you to follow up with a thank you note or email to wrap up the chat in a kind way.
    • Extra Tip: If you feel that the chat was particularly successful, the end of the call is a fantastic time to request if the person you’re speaking to has other colleagues, business partners, teammates, mentors, and employees at a said company that they recommend you speak with. This is a great way to continue getting your foot in the door and to increase your reach at a potential dream role/job. So, make sure to gauge the level of connection between yourself and the person you’re speaking to, and capitalize on the moment at hand!
  • Maintain the Relationship: A coffee chat might be a periodic occurrence, but communication should not be. Make sure to maintain the relationships that you’ve worked to schedule and cultivate! Whether this means a weekly check-in, an email update of your accomplishments quarterly, or a quick link to a relevant article, make sure to keep in contact and follow up after your thank you note!

Welcome back, everyone! Today, we’re shifting gears to a new topic: volunteering. While the winter months undoubtedly encourage staying indoors, keeping cozy, and ‘hibernating’ at home, we think that volunteering is a significant part of one’s fulfillment in everyday life and highly encourage you to take advantage of volunteering in your community. Specifically, if you’re in Chicago, this blog is for you! Keep reading to find out what goes into volunteering and some opportunities near you.

Employer Volunteering

First and foremost, in order to participate in a volunteering event, you must evaluate your options! At many companies, designated platforms are formed to encourage employees to volunteer, engage in events, connect with one another, and monetarily support foundations they feel passionate about. First look into the ways in which you can maximize donations through matching programs or through certain non-profits that your employer partners with. If you’re unsure where to start, a corporate responsibility report is a great way to learn about your company’s history of “walking the walk” when it comes to giving back. Otherwise, ask your hiring manager, boss, or teammates as a great way to find out how others have engaged in this benefit and how you can do the same!

Preparing for your Event!

  • Work Obligations: Preparing for a volunteer event is easy! Simply follow the steps below and you’re sure to have a smooth and enjoyable day. Always ensure that your work that day is complete and you are not sacrificing any deadlines due to the event. Even if this means working a bit more on the days prior, it’s key to be able to unplug and take advantage of your entire volunteering experience while there.
    • Alert your team or take PTO! While volunteering events usually ladder into regular work hours, this may not always be the case! Check in with your manager to set clear expectations of your absence and account for any required PTO hours.
  • Dress the part: Additionally, remember that you are representing the company you work for at corporate events! Dressing appropriately, wearing closed-toed shoes (no logos or graphics!), and adhering to company policy as you would in the office are essential at an offsite event. Make sure to be on the lookout for emails leading up to the event that clarifies dress expectations, weather, the activity you’re participating in, and if you should be wearing a company shirt.
  • Bring lunch, snacks, and water: The logistical email or resource that you receive before any volunteering event will likely clarify the dress code, provide a list of what to bring, and clarify what to expect at the event. This may mean that water and snacks are provided or a full-catered luncheon! Whatever it is, it’s important to be prepared so that you can last through the entire event without fatigue. Volunteering often looks like physical labor, so being fully energized and having food/water on hand is crucial to staying engaged.
  • Organize transportation: Finally, don’t leave logistics until the morning of! If you are required to travel to a volunteering event, look into company shuttles, stipends, or modes of transportation. If not, find your most accessible route and coordinate with a coworker when able! Always allow for extra time and arrive early to get settled and excited.

Welcome back to our hiring series – part 4 and final! Today, we’re focusing on Baby Boomers – with birth dates spanning between 1946 – 1964 (and we know, this is subjective), this group is anywhere between 1 and 15 years older than their Gen X coworker counterparts. So, if you fall into this age group or are an employer advertising position towards this age group, you’re in the right place. Keep reading to find out how to hire and retain this generation of professionals!

Let’s… Recruit Boomers!

Extra Note: While people in this generation may be retired at this point in their careers, many are still hard at work and active in company cultures. So, to be a well-rounded employer, it’s crucial to include, understand, and capitalize on this generation that already has more professional experience than any succeeding generation.

  • Work Ethic: Boomers have experienced vast changes politically, environmentally, technologically, and more throughout their lives. However, despite all of the changes they’ve endured, this generation is accustomed to a traditional experience of climbing the corporate ladder to seniority and a higher hierarchical position. In understanding this, boomers are also incredibly driven by the importance of climbing to senior positions and for that reason are incredibly hard-working. This is a great benefit to employers hiring these types of professionals – you’re guaranteed a hard worker who understands the importance of working their way up in your company and cultivating a vast understanding of your company’s structure along the way.
  • Role Conscious: As the terms ‘blue’ and ‘white-collar’ link back to baby boomers, they are super aware of being defined by their position and role in different industries. They are used to labels and the importance of one’s job in shaping their identity, in stark contrast to their younger peers who are likely more comfortable with experimenting with their identity. As they merge personal and professional identities, it’s particularly important to measure their satisfaction with your company’s values. These two value systems will be deeply linked to their personal outlook and fulfillment.
  • Competitive and Self-sufficient: As we mentioned above, this generation is used to the traditional concept of climbing up in the ranks of a company, and for that reason can be viewed as competitive in the office and as it relates to their coworkers. Pushing the concept of teamwork and collaboration as critical drivers of company-wide success is especially important for all employers and to all generations as it will serve as a reminder that one person’s success lifts the entire office, and not the other way around.
  • Longevity and Loyalty: Ultimately, baby boomers can be incredibly loyal employees that may work for you for several years if not for their entire career. Investing in this generation comes with incredible benefits in the form of hard work, loyalty as employees, and pride in the roles they are placed and promoted into. By engaging with all employees, and this generation, on their workplace satisfaction and alignment with your company’s values, you’ll be on track to retain their talent for the long haul.

Welcome back to our new hiring series! Today, we’re focusing on Gen X – with birth dates spanning between 1965 – 1980 (and we know, this is subjective), this group is anywhere between 1 and 15 years older than their Millennial coworker counterparts. So, if you fall into this age group, or if you’re an employer advertising position towards this age group, you’re in the right place. Keep reading to find out how to hire and retain this generation of professionals!

Let’s… Recruit Gen X!

  • Evaluate your Benefits Package: As you recruit and welcome new employees into your company, make sure you are meeting employees where they are at! As it relates to Gen X, these professionals highly value benefits like healthcare packages, dental and other types of healthcare coverage, network availability, family plans, and other benefits that contribute to overall compensation. Many of these employees have families and other individuals to care for so providing them with opportunities to leverage and apply to their entire household is a great way to differentiate your benefits offering.
    • Extra Tip: For our employers, it is crucial to continuously evaluate the way that your benefits and compensation hold up to other companies and industries in your area! Are you paying your employee’s similar compensation that they could be getting in the same role at another org.? Is your PTO in line with employee expectations? Have you ever sent a survey or quantified priority across different benefits as it relates to your employees (i.e.: asked for their input on benefits, healthcare, PTO, hybrid flexibility, etc.)?
  • Workplace Flexibility: On the same note as above, make sure to stay on the pulse of the work format preferred by your company. If you value your employees coming in person, make sure to ask yourself if that should be required every day. Is there a compromise that you can offer so as to ensure you receive the productivity you’re looking for while ensuring employee satisfaction? Gen X has experienced the grand majority of their careers in a pre-covid, 100% in-person format, but have now adapted to a flexible work environment over the course of the last few years. So, make sure to be mindful of the changes professionals have experienced and how that may have impacted their long-term outlook on daily work expectations.
  • Collaborative Teams and Communication: Once these employees are onboarded, make sure that you are assessing the ways their teams and role is structured as it relates to integration with other employees! Gen X seeks collaboration, and constructive feedback in order to improve their professional skill set, and teamwork. So, make sure to evaluate this priority before placing Gen X professionals in roles that might not require daily communication with others.
  • Tech Savvy: While this generation groups up outside of the digital revolution, they are still incredibly tech-savvy and receptive to communication from different formats! Are your software programs updated? Do you meet employees on the channel they prefer (i.e. email, Microsoft Teams, Zooms, etc.)? How can you best update your daily programs to meet industry tech advancements and stay in line with trending new updates and programs?
  • Investment in their Development, Gen X is a Loyal Workforce! Above all, Gen X employees are super valuable to your company and, if treated well, are loyal and will work hard to stay with you for many years. So, make sure to consistently check the pulse of your employee preferences and ensure that they feel fulfilled by the work your providing as well as the format of your work environment, team structures, culture, and more.

Welcome back to our new hiring series! Today, we’re focusing on Millennials – with birth dates spanning between 1981 – 1996 (and we know, this is subjective), this group is anywhere between 1 and 15 years older than their Gen-Z coworker counterparts. So, if you fall into this age group, or if you’re an employer advertising position towards this age group, you’re in the right place. Keep reading to find out how to hire and retain this generation of professionals!

Let’s… Recruit Millennials!

  • “Purpose Over Paycheck”: Historically, motivation has been fueled by incentive which is salaries and wages. There has been no greater reason to achieve results than by your expected compensation. However, this trend differs among millennials. In fact, these professionals actually prefer to feel a greater purpose for their work and being over a simple paycheck. It is when their responsibilities appear valuable and worthwhile that the greatest results and levels of motivation are achieved.
    • Extra tip: If you own or work for a company that is unsure of how to prove its purpose to its employees, make sure that you are aligned with the higher mission and vision guiding your initiatives. Is your direction toward a higher goal clear? Are your aspirations felt throughout your company? Can any given employee states the company mission with confidence? If the answer to any of these is ‘no’, consider re-assessing the company’s purpose.
  • Mentors, Support, and Employee Relationships: Millennials have proven to be less responsive to traditional supervisors, and more receptive when appointed caring mentors. Where the image of a “boss” usually coordinates with a visual of someone hovering over employees, enforcing deadlines or reminders, and in several instances enacting disciplinary actions, mentors are illustrated in a majorly different light. Mentors teach accountability, responsibility, and diligence with a stronger sense of support and care. This attitude is much more effective among the millennial generation.
  • Using Failure as a Part of the Process: Understanding that failure brings ultimate success is a vital component of the “recipe” for retention. It is most meaningful when employers help their millennial employees “get back up” after symbolically “falling down” after a failed assignment that may not have reflected the true effort. Collaboration is a key component of this process so that the final presentation of a project is not the first time it is being evaluated.
    • Extra tip: If you’re managing Millennials, make sure to always leave room for failure and for your team to learn from its mistakes. Whether this means kicking off projects earlier to extend the deadline, having ‘mock’ presentations before sharing with leadership, or hosting weekly ‘check-ins’ to track project progress, make sure to offer opportunities through which your employees can begin getting comfortable with trying new things and sometimes starting over.
  • Coaching and Promoting Growth: Instilling a level of freedom among these employees will allow them to activate their unique senses of creativity. This same culture built on healthy flexibility, as opposed to a more structured design, will help these crucial figures in completing their responsibilities with a necessary level of comfort and confidence in their work. Additionally, making employees aware of their potential for upward mobility will allow them to work even harder to reach greater success.
  • Work-Life Balance: Ultimately, remember that these employees come from a younger generation with values infused in their own preferences. Many of these employees expect to clock out after 5 PM and log on right before 9 AM – so, meet your employees where they’re about! Ask them about their work schedule, in-person structure, and daily preferences so as to meet them in the middle and compromise your company outlook with the attributes that will steer them towards being motivated to achieve success.

Welcome back to a new series, everyone! We are so excited to share with our employers (and employees) what some of our different generational professionals prefer in their work environments. So, if you are recruiting, thinking about starting up a company, or working within HR on company culture or corporate policy, this is a great article for you. Keep reading to stay up to date with how to best cater to employees of different ages and life stages!

Let’s…Recruit Gen Z!

  • Workplace and Office Environment: The environment is key to workplace satisfaction for this generation! So, what do we mean by a positive working environment? Consider natural lighting, open space, updated furniture, and an office that feels “light.” Gone are the days of dark cubicles and grey, and welcome are the days of color. The more enjoyable the physical environment is, the most enjoyable your employees are likely to be. Especially with companies hosting full-remote or hybrid work schedules, now is a fantastic time to evaluate how your office is perceived. When is the last time you made updates? How do you upkeep the space? Have you looked around at other comparable companies’ workspaces?
  • Hybrid Flexibility: That’s right, the pandemic created a permanent shift in the way that employees are considering their day-to-day in-person expectations. So, if able, we highly consider that your office integrates a flexible and hybrid working environment into your daily expectations. Whether this looks like 3 in-person/2 virtually enforced days per week, 5-day flexibility, 1-day per week requirement, etc., every formation looks different! Allowing and embedding trust into your employees by affording them the chance to guide their own daily routine is a phenomenal way to retain talent. We also encourage you to incentivize this type of benefit! Maybe this looks like meeting a sales quota, a deliverable, an outcome, etc., but creating rewards in the form of flexibility for performance is also a great means of positive reinforcement.
  • Well-being Benefits and Focus: What does this mean to your employment package? Mental health days, rewards for completing tasks, flexibility on Fridays, well-being checks, and resources (like online learning) are all great manifestations of a focus on your employee’s well-being. Remember, the happier that you can make your employees each day, the more elongated motivation and consideration they will feel to stay with your company. Gen Z is cognizant of the way that their employers show “care” for their professional development, and the best part is, you can do this in numerous ways. So make sure you’re staying up to date with employee satisfaction surveys, insight, suggestions, and the voice of your company.
  • Teamwork and Management Transparency: In the same way the Corporate influence (in terms of charity, volunteer, environmental, and social impact work) influences how Gen Z perceives companies, so does their leadership. Gen Z expects to be guided by honest, open, and approachable leaders that are motivated by and dedicated to their company. Instilling a clear mission and vision that is focused on positive change for the environment and world, and instilling a sense of care in employee well-being, is a crucial way that companies can ensure their Gen Z employees trust their intent and stick with them for the long haul.

Grab a friend, coworker, mentor, partner, or roommate, or connect with someone you haven’t seen in a while over painting/crafting so as to get involved in an activity while spending quality time with someone you enjoy.
  • Movie Night: If you’re looking to enjoy an activity while staying in the comfort of your home… a movie night is perfect for you! An often free, relaxing way to decompress and engage with a form of entertainment content. Make sure to keep an eye out for movie theatre movies that debut or are often quickly available on streaming services. However, if you’re itching to leave the house, locating and stepping into your nearest movie theater is an amazing way to “escape” your reality for a few hours and treat yourself to a fun activity!

Welcome back everyone and welcome to February! How is there another month already under our belts as we navigate 2023? It’s crazy to think that there are only a few weeks left until Daylight Savings and our impending return to warm weather. So, as you continue to bundle up and brave through below-zero days, make sure to read the below and continue reflecting on your career to ensure this year brings you professional fulfillment.

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to work at a large vs. small company, this article is for you! Keep reading here to find out my favorite aspects of both, how I interpreted the changes in my daily lifestyle as a result of the organizational structure, and how to evaluate which is the right fit for you.

Small vs. Large Company Comparisons…

  1. Daily Interactions: If you work for a small company, it is almost guaranteed that you will be able to build strong, deep-rooted connections with each of the employees that you interact with. You’ll come to quickly understand “who does what” and where to go to reach out for help in any instance. However, working for a large company means you will be working alongside many people who specialize in various roles. For that reason, you will likely find yourself reaching out to many different people for each different need. Doing so will help you to immerse yourself in different types of positions and establish a collective understanding of how your company operates and achieves success.
    • Extra Tip: Working for a large company, and in turn being required to step outside of your comfort zone to rely on employees you’ve never met for a variety of tasks, may be key to your professional growth. While it’s comfortable to achieve a family-like work structure, diving into the world of constant introductory conversations is an immediate gateway to organic networking every day!
  1. Lateral Movements: Are you ready to settle down in a position and dig your roots deep? If so, I would encourage you to check out a smaller organization. Doing so will help you to solidify your role and gain deep, intellectual knowledge in your newfound specialty. However, if you are someone who is still unsure of what you want to do in the end game (which is also totally okay – and is more like me!), then you may want to think about working for a larger corporation that will provide you with the ability to make lateral movements often, sometimes even yearly. Lateral movement will help you to explore new opportunities without having to conduct a whole new job search – and make sure to ask questions that get at this idea during your interview process! Before joining a new org., it’s key to understand how they view career exploration and lateral promotions or prefer employees to stay in their roles for years at a time.
  2. Mentorship Opportunities: If you work in an office that requires people to work in all types of roles in order to continue to operate (ie: Google, Apple, Sephora, etc.), your mentorship opportunities will range across several different “sub-industries” of business. However, if you are someone who is confident that you want to stay in your position and become a specialist, working for a small company may help you to find that person to act as a mention and vision of who you hope to be further on in your career. In my personal experience, not knowing exactly what I want to do, I enjoyed finding a mentor in a Marketing role while I was housed in Risk, as it helped me envision a future outside of the office I was currently a team member within.
  3. Meetings Meetings Meetings! At large companies, and as a result of several teams relying on each other, you should anticipate a large part of your role being encompassed by team huddles, touch bases with leadership, and other kickoff meetings to align on work that needs to be done. If you prefer to work in a silo, not only might this push you toward a certain career path (like Analytics) but might mean that a large office isn’t the best fit for you. Think about your ideal day structure – does it include live calls? Chats? Working alone? Working in-person? Once you’re clear on what you want out of a role, you’ll be suited to answer all of our questions above.

Welcome back, everyone! As we all hear and participate in the whispers about an oncoming recession, and begin to envision how that may impact our careers, we found it particularly relevant to discuss this topic today: how long should you be staying in one job? While this might mean a certain role, job, industry, company, etc., it’s important to know how recruiters will evaluate this component of your experience and resume.

How Long Should you stay in One Job?

Employee Loyalty

Ultimately, we know what you’re likely thinking, and we agree! Job hopping across companies and roles can make you look like an employee who is unwilling to stick to a certain commitment for a long period of time. While it’s reasonable to understand that candidates may shift in career focus or interest, doing so in a way that makes sense to your future employer is crucial to your hiring experience. So, have you swapped companies on a yearly basis to check if the grass really is greener? Or have you shifted into complementary roles with similar focus areas (i.e.: entry-level into management within the same ‘role’ type like Marketing)? A repetitive, short-term track record could impede a future employer’s interest in investing in you… but don’t stop here! There are pros to job rotations too, and keep reading to find out why.

Adherence to Growth

On the flip side, sticking to one role or job for too long may hinder the way that you appear as a candidate interested in career growth. Ask yourself this, have you focused on only 1-2 skills over the last year? 5 years? 10 years? Are you confident that you have a diverse talent skill set to market to future employers? As you could probably guess, your future interviewers will place focus on your evolved skills, your broad range of knowledge across business areas, and your interest in growth. Whether this means you’ve stuck to a role but acquired a set of certificates (like LinkedIn Learning), hopped around departments to understand a full business model, or accelerated into a management position in one team, all of these exemplify different types of growth.

  • Extra Tip: Especially for those of you that have been promoted through a company, your future employer will absolutely recognize your adherence not only to growth, but also to challenging yourself and pushing the envelope out of your own comfort zone and into new skills.

Career Focus

Finally, as a candidate, recruiters and employers know that the ultimate goal is for you to adhere to a career that provides you fulfillment and contentment. So, if you’re not feeling fulfilled in a certain job, role, or at a company, it’s time to make a plan and initiate a change. Ask yourself some of the below questions in order to evaluate if you might be suited for a job or career shift:

  1. Is your current role helping you further skills that you are interested in and that will help your career?
  2. Do you feel stagnant in networking? Are you inspired by your peers and leadership?
  3. Could you be making a higher salary elsewhere? Does your compensation outweigh your value in benefits? What does your benefits package look like?
  4. Are you staying in a role for the sake of comfort? Do you feel challenged?
  5. Are you aligned with your company’s mission and vision?

Some Stats for You!

According to The Balance Money, “the average number of jobs in a lifetime is 12, according to a 2019 Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) survey of baby boomers. Many workers spend five years or less in every job, so they devote more time and energy transitioning from one job to another. In its 2018 Employee Tenure Summary, the BLS reported, the median employee tenure was 4.3 years for men and 4.0 years for women.”

Welcome back, everyone! On Tuesday, we realized that it was “National Compliment Day” – specifically, a day to spend an extra moment providing someone with a genuine compliment or kind message. So, while that day passed just a few days back, we thought that it shouldn’t be just a 24-hour period but instead a way of approaching life. SO, if you didn’t know about this day or get a chance to give your compliment, keep reading below to find out some of our other favorite ways to show gratitude for those around you and brighten someone’s day!

Let’s…Brighten Someone Else’s Day!

  1. Remind Someone That You Care! There’s no greater way to show gratitude than by telling someone, in person, that you appreciate all that they do for you. In the midst of the digital age, it’s easy to thank people through emails, text, or even phone calls, but one of our most valued ways to express gratitude is in person. So, we encourage you to reach out to someone that you’re due for a catch-up with and get a coffee, lunch, drink, or dinner date on the books. Spending quality time with our friends, family, mentors, and all important people in our lives is a crucial component of human connection and value.
  2. Suprise a Coworker with Coffee: Now that many of us are working in hybrid formats, it’s more important than ever to maintain relationships with your coworkers. While coffee may not take a physical form, surprising someone with a virtual gift card to a coffee shop is a great way not only to encourage an individual to take a breath of fresh air and get outside, but to grab a treat along the way. If you can, we recommend you treat your team or coworkers with a surprise treat or coffee this week! Starting the day off strong with a ‘surprise and delight’ is a guarantee to brighten the mood of the office this week (especially in Chicago with our dreary weather!).
  3. Pay for the Person Behind You: The next time you find yourself at a coffee or sandwich shop, double your bill for the person behind. With such a surprise and act of kindness, you are guaranteed to make that person’s day!
  4. Clear Your Schedule for Someone Special: This may be a parent, spouse, child, close friend, or even a mentor. Regardless of the relationship, find a day to completely clear your schedule on their behalf. Although our “days” may not look like they used to, taking a long walk, binging a Netflix show, engaging in ‘self-care’ at home, trying a new craft, or cooking dinner with company is a great way to showcase to someone that they’re a top priority to you.
  5. Leave an Extra Tip: Especially in places where the bill doesn’t run very high, leave a larger tip than you regularly would! We can guarantee you that your extra note of gratitude will go a very long way. Especially during a time blanketed by job uncertainty, “donating” a few extra dollars to a server or anyone who assists you throughout the day is a great way to pass kindness forward and make a positive impact.

Welcome back, everyone! We hope that you had a great weekend and are ready for another week of work. As the end of January nears, many of us are not throttled fully into the winter season, with pockets of snow coming more frequently and ready to stick. So, get cozy and tune in to learn about year-end review processes and creating goals for the upcoming year.

Let’s Chat… Professional Upkeep!

Step 1: Year-End Review

Before aligning on goals for the new year, you will likely engage in a year-end review conversation. Whether this takes place before the New Year or after, these conversations surround your performance for the entire year prior and are the time when you will likely receive your performance ‘rating’ or metric as executed at the company level. These conversations are crucial to your professional development. They will play a big part in how you shape your upcoming year, identify skill sets you want to work on, and ultimately document your progress at a company to date. After these conversations wrap, you receive confirmation of any bonuses or compensation increases, it is time to realign on your goals! While many of these may be trickled down from the department or business unit level, there are still many opportunities to define skills you want to develop in a personal or professional way – have you been thinking about a specific LinkedIn course? Are you falling short on networking? Have you given any presentations in your current role? These are all questions to begin asking yourself that can tie into your goal-setting plan.

Step 2: Creating New Goals

After your review conversations wrap, it’s time to begin thinking about your goals and identifying specific attributes to call out. If you’ve received constructive criticism in any area… this is a great place to start! Are there any goals you did NOT get to meet in the year prior? Were these discussed in your last conversation? Additionally, is your team’s responsibilities shifting at all in the new year? Will you still be in the same role (are you part of a development or rotational program)? Begin thinking through what the next 12 months will look like and how you want to be viewed on your team and throughout the company as you jot down your ideas.

  • Extra Note: Remember, you will not be expected to complete the goal-setting process alone! Your manager is a crucial resource to guide you, as well as your mentors. So, make sure to actively engage in conversations about department-wide goals, team-wide goals, and any scorecards or metrics you are required to meet (i.e.: Sales, Emails sent, Provisioned accounts, Open rates, Click-through rates, Sales calls, Quotas, etc) so that you can embed them and follow requirements when it comes time to document.

Step 3: Check in on your Goals… and Often!

Finally, when the hard work is complete and your goals are secured in place (whether this is in an HR site, a word doc, an email to your manager, etc.), it’s time to continuously check in! Many employers will guide their employees through a structured goal-review session on a continued basis (often quarterly), and these are incredibly important to your improvement. Make sure to come to these check-ins with specific questions, ideas, and a readiness to receive feedback. Oftentimes, actively asking for feedback on specific skills or projects will be a key to your success as well as a fantastic framework you’re requesting from your manager through which they can guide you.

Welcome back, everyone! If you’re like us, and read the Morning Brew, or are in tune with murmurs in the office then you’ve likely heard whispers about many companies returning to in-person required work formats this year. Even more, the Morning Brew documents predictions that after recent events like “last week, Disney CEO Bob Iger told hybrid staff that, starting on March 1, they must return to the office four days a week. Two days later, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz announced a similar three-day RTO requirement, expressing irritation at internal badge swipe data that revealed employees were not “meeting their minimum promise” regarding hybrid work.

Employees at Vanguard, Paycom, and News Corp have also received recent orders to phase out remote work in the new year. A survey from Resume Builder found that 90% of companies will require a return to the office this year, signaling a shift away from the softly enforced hybrid policies that became popular during the pandemic.”

If you’re someone who’s working fully remotely, hoping to return to your corporate location a few days a week by choice, or is experiencing a company-wide mandate toward hybrid work, this article is for you! Keep reading to find out ways to optimize your new mornings (with an earlier start!) on the way to work.

Let’s…Optimize our Morning Routines!

  • Meditation: Above all, achieving a clear mental space ahead of entering into a work day and its obligations is a key to setting yourself up for professional and personal success. Meditation does not have to look like hard work and can be as simple as 5 minutes of your day! Remember, listing attributes of your life that you’re grateful for, clearing your mind, engaging in breathing, and any other form of mindfulness counts! It’s all about figuring out what works for YOU! We especially encourage you all to try and begin your morning without being glued to your phone or computer screen. It is incredibly important to your daily motivation, attention to detail, and focus, that you embrace the first few moments of your wake-up and keep them sacred to yourself and your own mind…. so clear out the noise from your phone and try setting it aside for at least the first few minutes of your day!
  • Substantial Breakfast: Let’s be honest, we know that when you say you’ve “had breakfast” it often means grabbing a cup of coffee and maybe a banana or granola bar on the way out the door. However, with a few extra minutes in the morning, you can create a breakfast that will fill not only your tummy but your mind with delight. Transforming this component of your morning into one that brings you peace and happiness will change the way you view morning food! We encourage you to make some eggs, avocado toast, an omelet, a fruit bowl with yogurt or oatmeal, granola or cereal, or any other “substantial” meal that will prove more nutritious than before! If this sounds like something you don’t have time for, we encourage you to experiment with breakfast ‘meal prep’ options like overnight oats, breakfast sandwiches, etc.
  • Exercise or Stretching: That’s right, we’re hammering in our encouragement of exercise as we often do. Exercising may look like a morning walk, a short run, an elliptical, a weight online video, a yoga routine, or a stretching sequence! The world of exercise is at our fingertips with just a quick online search, so make sure to incorporate some time for this highly rewarding experience into your morning! Not only with your body prove better off, but you’ll also feel a higher sense of energy and productivity as a result too.
  • Daily Preparation: Finally, allowing yourself to relax and sit down for a few extra moments each morning will help provide you extra time and space to prepare for the day ahead. This may look like a google calendar, a physical planner, a quick sticky-note to-do list, or any other form of “scheduling” – regardless of the form it takes, planning out your day will create a sense of accountability and organization all at once and help you to clarify your daily obligations before the chaos of the day begins.

Welcome back, everyone! Many of us experienced a break from our regular Mondays yesterday in the form of observing Martin Luther King Jr. Day – we hope you were able to observe and reflect on the holiday, its lessons, and its impact on your daily life. Were you able to give back to the community yesterday as a recognized ‘service day’? If yes, that’s great! If not, that’s okay too! There are many ways to participate in charity, and many were eloquently outlined by theSkimm: see here.

Sneak peek: “If you’ve got time…A little goes a long way. In under an hour, you could assist people who have visual impairments with everyday tasks (think: reading a product label or picking out clothes) through the Be My Eyes app. Or you could write thoughtful letters to residents of assisted living facilities and care homes via Letters Against Isolation. If you have a bit more time, consider organizing an equity challenge for your company or team, preparing and serving meals at your local soup kitchen, pitching in at one of the country’s national parks or monuments, or helping kids and teens with schoolwork and college readiness workshops via Girls Inc. For more volunteer opportunities in your area, search here.” – Thank you to theSkimm for their resources!

Now that we’re back to Monday and jumping into a shortened work week, and potentially condensed timelines to our submissions and due dates, we’re here to get you back on track. Keep reading below to find out how we catch up after a holiday weekend!

Let’s…Jump Back into Work!

  • Hydrate: One of the best ways to stay awake and help your body get back into the swing of a healthy week is to keep yourself hydrated. Keep a water bottle by your desk and try to drink the entire thing multiple times throughout the day; and if you’re worried about forgetting, set reminders on your calendar or mobile phone to do so! There are also a variety of water bottles available everywhere that track time stamps on the side to remind you to keep up through the day.
    • Extra TipIn order to encourage yourself, try forcing yourself to finish a glass of water prior to a morning juice, matcha, or caffeine! That way, your drink of choice will serve as a reward instead of as a starting point for your day.
  • Nutrients! As enticing as it may feel to snack on chips, morning sweets, or any junk food, try to jump-start your week with nutrients instead. Starting off the week with healthy meals will rejuvenate your body and ensure that you are feeling energized and prepared for all obligations. On the same note, we also offer you the tip to bring workout clothes to work, as it may be your key to stepping back into the gym (and will also save the time of having to stop back home).
  • Stay Organized: Making a to-do list, filling out a daily planner or calendar, or even using a sticky note and writing down what you need to complete is proven to help individuals accomplish their daily tasks and goals. This will also keep you organized and decrease your chance of forgetting a meeting or assignment. Make sure to check out the multiple articles we’ve written in the past to learn about certain scheduling strategies that could assist your organization… we recommend starting with ‘time-blocking’!
  • Check-In: With your inbox! Try out a “priority” folder to move all of your most important emails from the weekend into a different space, as we all know how crowded an inbox may be when we take a momentary break. And make sure to keep your team in the know about where your projects or outstanding requests are on their way to completion – while you’re not expected to finish all of your obligations momentarily, you are expected to inform those that rely on your work when they can expect it!
  • Let Yourself Breathe: Finally,… schedule breaks into your day as you would any other obligation! Letting yourself have time to relax is equally as important as completing your work to your mental clarity and ability to maintain motivation.

Searching for a new role? Check out our open jobs list!

Welcome back, everyone! Today, we’re hoping to share with you reasons why and ways to take advantage of workforce resources and benefits. When weighing job packages, we constantly remind you all of the importance of valuing aspects of a workplace beyond wages and compensation. Not only does this mean access to healthcare, PTO days, etc., … but it also means those pockets of culture sprinkled into your day-to-day role! Keep reading below to find out about some common workplace resources companies provide to employees so that they can continue bettering themselves each day in and outside of work.

Taking Advantage of ‘Unseen’ Workplace Benefits:

  • LinkedIn Learning: Above all, I penciled this one in as my corporate employer recently introduced a new HR benefit in the form of providing employees access to an enormous variety of LinkedIn Learning courses. While there are undoubtedly free courses (maybe even on LinkedIn!) already available, the library is custom-made to the interests and skills I’ve selected, and available to me at any day and time. Especially for those of us hoping to improve our professional skillset and continue achieving personal growth in 2023, this is a phenomenal way to do so.
    • Extra Tip: There may be other online or in-person courses at your fingertips that you don’t even know about! If your company displays an internal site or application list, make sure to sift through it and identify any ‘unseen’ resources that are paid for and available to you. For example, last year I found out that our company supports enrollment in Amazon Web Services courses that could help us achieve a variety of certifications. There are likely software platforms (like Udemy), introductions, or even consumer reports and libraries stored in your company’s database that you may not even know about. Especially for us Marketers, it’s super important to be aware of consumer-driven platforms through which we can derive consumer insights, behavioral analyses, competitive studies (Comperemedia), and more!
  • Gym and Wellness Access: As our society continues to place immense focus on mental health awareness and the value of work-life balance, as well as wellness, it is likely that your company HR policy might have shifted to include this type of benefit. Check out any opportunities through which your employer may cover the expense of a fitness class, offer a wellness PTO day, provide insurance with access to therapy, or otherwise relieve the costs and encourage wellness activity. Doing so will not only alleviate your personal financial responsibility of ‘self-care’, but might even be the push you needed to take the next step toward improving your mental health!
  • Software Courses and Availability: Similar to LinkedIn learning and other certification courses, make sure you’re staying aware of the technical skills you want to gain out of your experience at a given company or in a role. Software platforms like SQL, Tableau, Access and other basic coding are often paid for and available to an employee of any corporation that uses Microsoft Suite apps! So, take stock of some skills you’re hoping to gain in 2023, and get started with any work downtime that you can find.

Welcome back, everyone! We hope that you had a lovely weekend and, if you’re in the Midwest like our team is, were able to stay warm and cozy indoors. Almost halfway into January (time in 2023 is already FLYING!), we figured that it is within these few weeks that many of our student followers are arriving at their semester abroad location. Whether that’s the case for you, if you’re traveling abroad for work, or otherwise spending extended time in a foreign country, keep ready below. We’ll walk through what to do when you land, how to optimize your experience, and how to immerse in a new culture!

Let’s… Land Abroad!

Get Your Physical Bearings In-Tact

First and foremost, in order to optimize your safety and experience in any new place, it’s crucial to actually get your bearings. That’s right, pull out a physical or digital map and start with your new living situation – are you in an apartment? A home? A hosted-stay? A dorm room? Whatever that looks like, make sure to identify the neighborhood you’re residing in, your nearest public transportation route and pickup, and proximity to the airport. All of these resources will help you to plan out your schedule, commute to work or school, and ability to navigate the city. We recommend you set aside at least 1 full day to do so without any imminent responsibilities or to-dos. This way, you’ll be able to get your bearings at ease and without trying to meet a deadline. Make sure that when you’re exploring it’s light out, you’re with people you trust, and you can get back to your home if need be (charge your phone and identify transportation resources like Uber or Taxis)!

Embrace the Culture and People!

Next up… embrace your surroundings! This means the culture, the atmosphere, the people, the language, the food, the drinks, the clothing, and more. Remember, you are in a new place, meaning that it’s up to you to figure out how to best thrive in a new community. Learning the native language (at least enough to get around and request basic needs), dressing appropriately, embracing the cuisine, and otherwise showcasing your desire to learn a new way is your key to success. You will be amazed at how willing strangers are to help you when approached the right way! Make sure to say hello on the street, chat when you walk into a store, ask your professors or teachers for pointers, and learn about a new way of life along the way. Make sure that you always remember…asking for help is crucial!! No one expects a foreigner to understand the ins and outs of their city, but asking for input and expressing gratitude for assistance is the best way to obtain the help you need.

Adventure ‘Off the Beaten Path’

We all know that nowadays, no matter where you’re headed around or nowhere near your home… social media is at your fingertips. It’s easier than ever to ‘vet’ out certain restaurants, bars, or general locations by plugging them into any social media outlet and viewing them through your screen. However, while it’s easy to dive into the most touristic attractions, we encourage you to also embrace the unknown and local sweet spots that might be hidden at first glance. By building friendships with locals, learning the language, and asking the right questions, you’re set to identify the most hidden and coveted spots in any environment. Not only are these often the most special and delicious spots at any sight, but they’re a great way to truly dive into a culture to its fullest.

Welcome back to the blog, friends! Today, we’re here to discuss the opportunities at your fingertips for the 2023 New Year. If you feel like you’re reaching any stagnation in your career, are itching to be granted new responsibilities or opportunities in your role, or are otherwise generally open to personal and professional growth, this blog is for you. Keep reading below to find our top 3 tips for optimizing your career advancement this year!

Engage and Utilize Your Network:

There is no greater resource to help you in advancing your career than your own social and professional networks. These people are there to support you, and may very well provide you with the gateway towards obtaining and discovering new opportunities or promotions. One of the greatest ways to utilize your network is by hosting a professional gathering (maybe even think of it as a party)! Focus on doing so in a casual setting such as a home or restaurant venue so as to keep the atmosphere light and comfortable. Offering appetizers, drinks, or even small activities will help this feel like a fun social outing. To get the most out of these types of events, we encourage you to extend invitations beyond those who you already know! Let those who you have invited invite two or three other people. This way, you will be afforded the opportunity to strengthen and expand your network.

  • Extra Tip: Joining charities, extracurricular clubs, or other community-oriented organizations in your city is also a phenomenal way to meet like-minded individuals. Make sure to stay involved with young professionals around you to continue gaining and reaching a network of people beyond the scope of your company, role, or industry.

New Skills:

Advancing any aspect of your life often requires extending your level of education and knowledge. In doing so, contemplate your contentment with your current level of intelligence about your general career path, work obligations, title, role, or even education in general. Have you ever thought about obtaining a new certificate or degree? Potentially taking a few new business courses just for fun? Today, there are more resources than ever before (many offered by LinkedIn and Amazon) to extend your knowledge and reach beyond your role… so take advantage of courses and activities you can do even from the comfort of your own home!

If you’re not at a point where you are afforded enough free time to dedicate to education advancement, try purchasing a novel, subscribing to a podcast or newsletter, or even adding your email to a blog list. Utilizing these resources will allow you to maintain engagement about current events within your specific profession and your entire industry.

Mentors:

Do you have a mentor? Someone you look up to guide decisions, career choices, and offer general advice? If not, now is the perfect time to designate someone to fulfill this role! In identifying this person, take time to evaluate people within your workplace and life who you look up to as a positive influence and source of growth. If you’re struggling to identify this person, think about reaching out to people who inspire you in an even more casual setting! Conducting informational interviews, coffee dates, or lunch meet-ups will help you to expand your network and also find people who may end up as your mentor for the duration of your professional career!
